Need Help - Re Bank Fraud

How did they manage to arrange and confirm loans over a weekend and then empty the account of them?
What bank doesn't spot that as strange bahaviour and investigate?

Good god OP, if this is real, how they hell did they manage to do you for 20K?
Where did they get all your information?

Sorry I'm on a 3G card connected at 2G so hard to explain everything, made the first post in a rush and a panic.

Ok so went out for a friends 25th birthday party, got drunk and we were having fun, normal night out for anyone really. My friends (bless them) left the club without me and I came out when it closed. I then realised I had lost my phone, whether it came out when dancing or was plucked out I have no idea. The phone didnt have much info on it, but it did log into Facebook automatically and had access to my emails - from this they could get name, date of birth, address from my emails I assume.

However, and this is the bit neither myself or the bank can work out. I used my debit card at a cash machine to get £20 out - it was 5.30am by this point. The taxi driver however, was out of his taxi and close to the cash machine so potentially could have looked over my shoulder I guess. Anyhow then got my money, got in taxi, went back to friends, reported phone stolen etc.

The next day, about 1pm the bank phoned and asked if I had made payments at Debenhams / Currys etc. I said that I hadnt and they asked me to check my card. Pulled an almost identical card from my wallet, but it was a different HSBC card - dont know how it got switched. I did use my card in the club to buy drinks, maybe someone saw my pin then? Either way I dont know how I got someone elses card. The bank are saying it wasnt a cloned card used, but wont give me anymore details of this other card I gave to them to investigate (bet they destroyed it).

So the card was used, with the pin at various places, but the main problem is how all my savings got into my current account (the one with the stolen card). The bank told me that they called telephone banking and answered my DOB, Postcode and Security Question correctly. Security question probably could have been guessed I think. The bank then MUST HAVE given them my account number as its never been written down anywhere. Its totally confusing, I've spent a week trying to work it out so far.

The CCTV should show its not me making some of the payment, I dont know if Currys and Debenhams was online or a shop as bank wont tell me. Asking for a copy of the call record is a good idea, I will do that, anything else?

I am going to make an appointment to see the bank manager, but I just feel totally sickened, this is all the money I have in the world and was my house deposit also :(

I find it hard to believe that you have lost 20k in savings, and that nothing can be done. I've never heard anything like it... and how would anyone be able to "guess" your name, address... as well as the secret security number required for all HSBC telephone and internet banking transactions that i've had with HSBC over the last 10 years or so? Something really doesn't add up.

As an HSBC customer for over 15 years, again something doesn't add up. Most of this can bee put down to someone seeing your pin and swapping your card. At the end of the day you were drunk in a club/bar and you most likely typed your PIN in not a particularly secret way. We've all done it.

However, the whole telephone banking transfer of savings does not add up.

Also, sorry to hear this, £20k is a lot of money, being all your savings etc.

PS - you have a phone with autologin to Facebook and Email...... pin protect it!!!!!

my money would be on someone in the club if you paid for drinks by card

some sort of pin reading device etc. easy enough to switch your card with someone elses in a dark night club and you not notice. but if you used the card to lift a score at the cash machine then that doesnt add up. sorry but i call BS on this story especially with the bank not being the slightest bit interested. i'm sure if this really happened the bank would have been on top of this pronto the police would have been involved etc etc

Seems to me that the same people that got your phone got your real card when you were drunk in the club. They were able to satisfy the bank that they were you with the security questions and such got access to the account number. From there they could do anything.

Was this the same debit card that the transactions below were made at?

This is where things dont make sense for me. Is the different HSBC card someone elses card? Or does it have your name on it?

How on earth did they have your security question answer? How did they transfer the funds? Was it by CHAPS, BACS or faster payment? Surely they have the recieveing account details? Why would the bank give them the account number? There is nothing that can be done with an account number apart from setting up direct debit details (if you know the sort code)? Plus if they had your debit card I would have thought the debit card would have sort code and account number on it? Also would the bank not be suspicious someone asking if they have a savings account? This would be ringing major alarm bells for me.

CCTV will possibly show you who made the transaction but only if it was in store?

There seem to be some major gaps / issues with this story.

Plus, if Monster's card did get switched, then why did the cash machine accept his PIN when he withdrew £20? Unless the club had 9,999 rogue cards behind the counter and they selected one that matched Monster's PIN when he bought his drinks...

This is fishier than Tubby Isaacs.

Indeed. But even if it us real there's not a huge problem, all you need to do is make requests for the CCTV where the card was used. As soon as you can prove it wasn't you at those purchases you have a head start in getting the money back.

Indeed, its why the story doesnt add up. He manages to withdraw £20 from a card that doesnt seem to be his?

Debenhams and Curries, online deliver to card address.
In store will have CCTV.
So either way you should have an address.

BACS or other bank transfer will leave a trail. Fraud investigation will follow it and recover.

They can't withdraw 20k from a cash machine in one night.
I don't see how they could establish loans and transfer loans in that time either.
