BMW's...I think I want one.

Yes, yes...calm down. I was expecting you to be a bit more kind Fox. Lest we forget, you were new to the world of BMW once...

I don't think that thinking you might be able to double the fuel economy with a remap is much to do with being new to BMW!

It's well worth buying a nice well cared for one yes, they are great cars ...but I wouldn't buy one without a 6 cylinder + engine though, you just don't have the power to realise what half of the car is about then. So you may aswell buy something more refined. BMW's are supposed be be sporty, for this reason I think you really need the right enigne in it. The 4 pot ones are in my opinion more of a fashion statement than a proper BMW, although they are nicely made I suppose.

:/ I'm confused...

i thought you were looking at 2.0L 4 pot ones?

The 2.5's are in the (early?) 325i and are 6 pots, which have higher running costs.

They don't cost /that/ much more to run and maintain. Servicing at Snows on a 6 year old 330Ci Sport is only a bit more than my 318Ci Sport and parts are either the same or just a bit more again. It's one of the reasons why now I wish I waited another year because I could have gotten a 330Ci for the same price (or similar) but back then the cheapest 330Ci in the same age condition + mileage of the 318Ci was £15k. Heck even MPG is the same as the 330Ci (27~ around town, 39-43 motorway).

Only other big cost difference could be insurance but that's not an issue if you're older and have a few NCBs.

Still, the 2.0 318 engine isn't a bad engine. It's perfectly capable in the lower gears and higher revs but it lacks any momentum in 4th and 5th at NSL+ speeds so dropping gears becomes the norm.

But wasn't there the question the other day of something being wrong with your car though if you're getting that bad economy?! Or your driving style is poor.

The manual says for the 330i:

(urban) 22.1mpg
(extra urban) 40.9mpg
(combined) 31.0mpg

maybe my driving style is poor, but my real world figures are;

(urban) more like 17mpg
(extra urban) more like 35mpg
(combined) 27mpg

If you're booting it from the lights, you're not going to get anywhere near the manufacturer's figures.
And I quite like booting it from the lights :o

As for the OP: Get a 4-pot 3, unless you really want the increased running costs of a six cylinder model.

These days booting it at the lights is pointless because seconds later is a Kia driver doing 27MPH or another set of lights ¬_¬

Boring 4 pot petrols belong in boring cheap cars. If you want a premium car, buy a premium engine. If you want a cheap engine, buy a cheap car.

Dull 4 pots are fine, I've got one in my boring cheap car. Wouldnt want to buy one for 12k though.

You want a badge, thats fine, but buy one of these instead http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1737344.htm

What happens if i love everything about the E90 3 Series, but don't want large running costs and am not bothered about performance?
