Whining PAS (Ford Fusion)

Hi all,

I noticed the power steering on my mums Fusion was making quite a bit of noise when driving it today, i.e. when being used rather than when straightening up. It sounds a bit like the new Mini that had the noisy PAS.

I was going to check the fluid but didn't know if there is anything else to check or whether it was a common issue & any idea of potential costs?

Many thanks

Does it happen when using full lock or all the time? Most of the Ford PAS pumps will make a noise when at full lock.

EHPAS System?

Rather than a engine driven pump for the hydraulic pressure its an electric pump and they whine.

Mini has it and we used a Ford Galaxy unit on a prototype Range Rover, its noisy!

Yeah I'm pretty sure it only does it when on full lock (or near full lock).

Yup I remember the Mini was 'famous' for it :p I'm sure it wasn't that loud before and don't get anywhere near the same noise in my Fiesta which is pretty much the same car and engine etc.

My ST does it on full lock - it's normal.

If it has got louder there is a fluid reservoir you can check, as its just an electric pump rather than fully electric PAS. I've no idea where it is on your car though (For me its a black bottle on the off-side, which looks much like any PAS bottle).

Out of the two Fords with PAS I have had and the 3 Fords with PAS my father has owned, every single one has made a noise on or near full lock. If you can hear it while turning off a side road, then something might be awry.

Will check the fluid tomorrow but its definitely a lot louder than it was before. I think it would be unusual for the motor to go or something?

PAS will generally get noisy when fluid is low, so you may just find its that.

Otherwise, if the pump was failing you'd probably notice a reduction in 'assistance'.

I suspect its the same volume; it just seems louder now you've noticed it.

gf's 05 fiesta PAS was whiney even when it wasnt on full lock

i flushed and replaced the pas fluid with new ford stuff. perfect ever since. the car would have been 4 years old at the time

have you ever had the fluid replaced? Its not a standard service item, its a extra. Once that fluid starts to break down, bubbles form and will make even more noise.

In my Fiesta i have to replace it every year :(

with my old car (which was very unloved) it had this terrible screeching noise when on full lock

topped up the power steering fluid and it sorted it

Just checked the level and its a little below the minimum line, although with the size of the tank being so small, it doesn't seem to be a big amount to get it up to the max line.

Should I just buy some and top it up or does it need to be flushed out first and replaced entirely? We've had the car about 10 months & its not had any servicing yet as it was done when we bought it.

Thanks

Bought some in Halfords this morning and decided to try topping it up first. It took about a third of the litre at a rough guess and the noise went straight away - was a bit sceptical about it going to work for some reason. Topped my Fiesta up the same time.

Thanks
