VDSL or Cable 50mb?

I used to have 20mb cable with Vigin Media, currently I have 8mb with O2. I want more speed and had been waiting for VDSL/FFTC since I first heard it was coming over a year ago. But now it is here it works out quite expensive.

I was looking at IDNET http://www.idnet.net/solutions/home/broadband/default-fibre.jsp

But I would really need to be on the £35 a month package, the cabinet is literally just round the corner from me so I think I would get pretty close to the 40mb down 10mb up, but the limits are as follows.

Total Download Allowance 200GB
Peak Allowance (9am-midnight) 50GB
Off-Peak Allowance 150GB

I would probably hardly use the connection after midnight, meaning I would only really have 50Gb a month, with 40mb speed I'd be worried how quick I would use this up.

Alternatively I could return to Virgin on 50mb, and have unlimited.

If I moved my phoneline to Virgin too and used quidco cashback it would even be cheaper, £31.32 a month across the first year.

VDSL is £32.08 if I pay a year up front but also £9 for my phone line, £47 activation fee and I'd need to buy a new router.

Are there any cheaper VDSL providers? (Not BT)

VM 50mb is really looking the better option.

I would go for Virgin personally. I'm very happy with Be/O2 LLU when you can get good speeds otherwise Virgin is an obvious alternative compared to FTTC with limits unless you're in an oversubscribed area.

Basically I was with them for years until one day they stopped charging me but the service still worked, I didn't want to inform them so kept quiet, it worked for quite a long time until earlier this year when they seemed to cut it off. I ran it alongside my O2 as a secondary connection, now I'm missing the speed big time.

I think unless I can find a better VDSL package then I will be going back to VM but this time taking my phone too, I hate BT anyway.

Yea I know its pretty good having used it for years before. The upload with VDSL is much higher though.

Then again in the other thread there are rumours that 50mb upload will increase to 5mb and also 50mb may be increasing to 100mb.

Have read on here that the upload will be 10percent of your download speed.
Ie 50Mb down 5Mb up, and 100Mb down 10Mb up.

Then i will be over the moon...

Cable would probably be better. When VDSL becomes more available, I think (or rather would like to think) the prices will go down a bit or else maybe usage will change. There have been a lot of complaints on BT's own message boards about the 100Gb cap, so it could change.

Depending on what you do for TV, it could be one of those things where it would work out cheaper to get TV/Phone/BB all from Virgin. Unless you already subscribe to them?

Virgin are coming next Tuesday to install.

I have a worry though. My address already has cable into it, but it goes in to my old bedroom, now I have a flat behind the house so I want the cable coming in direct, but as this is a newish build there is nothing in the street right next to me, they put a little cover next to the other houses, I hope it isn't a problem. They would need to cut the pavement to get the cable to my flat. Will they come prepared to do this? I can see there being problems.

Here is a diagram

Well I got installed today. Sure enough the guy couldn't put it directly into my flat so it is still in the old position, he said in a couple of weeks they will come and dig and move it directly into my flat but the pavement will need to be dug up and a new cable fitted.

Working fine for now though, loving 6mb/s download speeds.

Oh yea, the engineer also said upload will be increasing to 10mb and download to 200mb :o :D

Watch your heads, just gonna wave my epeen round lol

200mb is being trialled, but it will probably be awhile before it rolls out!

100mb is coming at the end of the year though.

Stop mocking me :(

Damn I wish my house would sell so I can hurry up and move into the city :D

Stuck on O2 LLU, which is great for the price as a mobile customer. But i need to get into double figures! :)

Dont hold your breath for 10mb but it is being trialled along with 5mb which seems to be more likley atm, From what ive heard engineers have very little info on whats coming product wise, so probably based off of general chit chat and so on.
