So I download unrEVOked3 and then what? Their site doesn't give much info on what to do, unless I'm being useless, which I probably am.

Awesome I thought that if I rooted the phone it would wipe it and I'd have to install a custom rom there and then. So basically I install unrEVOked3, get hold of Titanium backup and that will backup all the data on the phone?

The unrevoked method will give you root access and install a custom recovery utility called clockworkmod, which will allow you to take a full backup, apply ROMs etc.

Just tried the guide posted above for flashing to the unbranded ROM, but I seem to get stuck on the last stage when it is flashing the ROM. Error code is 140. Something about an incorrect bootloader

ERROR[140]: BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR

The ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android phone.

Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again.

I think you need a bootloader below version 0.80.

I am trying that, the problem is there are just, php, css, gif and png files in the hboot driver folder.

They are used for the html page which gets extracted. It will explain how to install the driver for connecting to your Desire.

Just rooted and flashed mine to Froyo, rather painless really. Got the Wireless hotspot feature I have been waiting for. Only titanium backup hasnt saved my contacts from what I can see and I didnt have them synced to google either

My battery seems worse. A little browsing and it rockets down. Though, Android System is still being listed as using the most power at about 47%

that sucks, syncing the contacts with google if you have a google account is a must,

would help if you uninstalled htc sync and installed the correct drivers - which i bet £100 you havent done!
