the u-bahn runs 24 hours basicaly.

if they take the trains off they put busses on that follow the u-bahn routes

Runs 24hr per day, just reduced frequency post midnight. http://www.bvg.de/index.php/en/ has all the info you will ever need.

(and the public transport bosses in the UK need to look and learn.....)

Berlin's public transport is totally awesome. One time a train was cancelled and another turned up in 3 minutes!
