**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

I'm not much of a gamer these days but I still have a soft spot for strategy games, so when an RTS like this arrives I decided to just buy it on a whim. I've never played starcraft before and to be honest I've never really fancied it from the screenshots and videos it always appeared a bit too sci-fi and nerdy.

Anyway I have to say I really like the game so far. I'm about 14 missions in (half way?) and I've been converted. However I've noticed the mission difficulty go up a notch - basically having gone through so far first time I'm finding I have to restart these later ones because my strategy hasn't worked. I think a large part of it is because I'm still not au fait with the game mechanics - what unit counters what, how many worker bees do I need gathering resources, is building two or three barracks viable or completely newbish? Stuff like that. I've had a quick look online for guides & videos but the stuff out there seems waaay too advanced. For example a 'basic build order' video on YouTube had some guy micromanaging his base so fast I felt sick and couldn't be bothered with it. Not something I aspire to at all and pretty much killed any desire to venture online with it.

I've ended up ordering the bradygames guide which I think will be more on my level (don't laugh)

Yay, beat the Safe Haven mission.

Cant get any further though. Massive armies of marine/marauder/medivac get slaughtered in the enemy base, small armies of tanks dont even get that far :/

Im only on normal difficulty :(

gotta use all forces as one unit, get your marines/firebats advancing with load of medics, hold the line then bring in the siege tanks, deploy them and watch all hell break loose. really i think this is the most effective tactic with the terrans in the campaign, hasn't failed me yet. just remember to speed things up like H for hold position, and E for siege mode (D for tank mode), simple things like that can make a huge difference IMO :)

How do you afford to make all that?

Example: on the Moebius Factor, I probably have about 30 SCVs gathering minerals constantly. Thats enough for about 5 medivacs full of marines and a few marauders, and simple base security.
If I sat building things for an hour or so, I could steamroll the map, but I only have about 30 minutes to destroy the second objective...

I am really enjoying this game!!I am looking for a teammate so we can have some 2v2s,I'm tired of playing with randoms!I am a Terran player, currently in Bronze league but I am getting better!Add me if u want too

Added, give me a shout when you're next on :)

I've won just under half my practice matches. Got lucky first few games then met some proper players and I learnt a lot. This game really is ****ing brilliant :D

Little tip for new players: it seems to be all about economy. Disrupt their gathering in any way possible. I play as Terran so getting 2 medievacs up quickly and sending it to their (hopefully) inadequately defended base can cause some serious problems if you take out a large amount of drones/probes/SCVs. You usually will only have 10 seconds or so in their base so stimpack up and rinse their gatherers. Whilst they recover you're expanding :)

In MP you would not aim for 27 probles before pumping out units though. A good way to get seriously rushed.

I meant aim for 27 probes before expanding. Ideally you would have about 50 supply or boost for more units at the start but continue making probes and obviosuly trying to scout to watch out for an attack (something I dont do enough)

Added mate. I'm a bronze terran player so will catch you for a few games

Any noobs fancy a game? I've played about 25 online matches and never played the original so someone with similar experience would be nice :)

2 for 2 :)

Kind of felt sorry for the guy, who, in minute 4 built a second command center. The time I got there he had one marine and one tank - 2 unused starports too. I really should get out of the practice league methinks. My build is pretty solid now. Build for rushing of course, but against all these new players it works well. They have all their fancy buildings, but nothing else. Watching the stats closely too - improving stats such as unused resources and resource totals game by game.

It is almost like having two new games - can't decide between SP and MP.

I've had a few games like that in the practice league but then I've had others with really good players. I thought my resource output was pretty sweet for a Terran but I played some bloke and he had an insane amount of troops at my base very early. I should watch the replay of that actually.

How do you watch replays?

On the main menu you have "Singleplayer" and "Multiplayer" at the top left. Underneath multiplayer you will see a little camera, amongst other icons. Click that :)

Very handy indeed. I've watched many replays to witness my failings from a different prospective, it definitely helps.
