They pioneered some of the technologies we take for granted - not least, SLI.

The trademark for SLI was one of the things Nvidia got when they bought 3dfx, but the technology itself was killed.
The SLI we have now is called that for marketing reasons, trading on the goodwill 3dfx had - but it's completely different.
3dfx introduced Scanline Interleaving - where the 2 cards would draw every other line of the output - essentially meaning each card was responsible for rendering a half height display.
When Nvidia released SLI, it became Scalable Link Interface - a fast interconnect between 2 or more cards allowing them to pool triangle units etc.
