Fiesta driver seeks value performance

Yup, someone who wants a cheap lukewarm car and was originally considering an A3 diesel is exactly the right buyer for an Evo or AMG mercedes

£10K ?

Got to be an EVO VIII GSR surely?

Either that or somthing more wafty with AMG in the title I guess.

You never fail to amuse me, he's got stuff like the 120d in his list and you think he needs a Mitsubishi Evo or an AMG Mercedes for £10k!? Have you even bothered to look at what sort of AMG Mercedes buys you?

He wants 0-60 in under 8 seconds. Therefore its unlikely he's going to want to pay the significant additional expense involved to get something that does 0-60 in under 5 seconds. He's obviously not after the performance or the hassle offered by a ballistic missile.

Rubbish. To put it another way the concept of spending 15k on a 5 year old 5 Series is also irritating.

But if you like the car, its styling, its peformance, if you REALLY want that particular model, if there is nothing else what so ever in the market that is equivalent, that then is it really such a bad thing? Though, this is more applicable if you are going for something which has reached a level where it will depreciate much much slower (if at all in some cases)

In the case of the Golf, however, a car that has competition in the market, some of which may be argueably better, and it is likely to still be hit hard by further depreciation, I would not be looking to spend 5 figures.

I've been looking into the Mk5 Golf Gti, prompted by the suggestions here. They do look promosing, especially with the DSG gearbox. How much is a Mk5 Gti at around £11k likely to depreciate? £1.5k/year?

You should buy the fastest car you can possibly get for what you can afford. If you dont, you are not a petrolhead!

Im now thinking of an Ultima GTR kit. would love to build one of these up myself.

However, the running costs on an EVO VIII GSR are fine for the OP.

Probably hardly any different from something as homo as a 120d, fuel aside that is. Not to mention the sheer amount knickers he might moisten with such a car.

Not sure on the depreciation, but I would only consider a DSG model together with a good warranty (see last month's Evo for a 2nd hand guide to them).

good idea.

What about an A3 TFSI? Apparently a 6.9 second 0-60. This seems to be Audi's version of the Golf GTI? The Golf seems to be more expensive. Would this be the better second hand buy?

Just how harsh is the S-Line ride compared to a Golf Gti? Anything to watch out for with the DSG gearbox?

2006 A3 T FSI 2.0 (£10k-£11k)?

Insurance: £500
Fuel: £1055
Maintence: £750
Tax: £235
Depreciation: £1000
Loss of return on capital: £550

Total: £4090

Fox: I'm afraid I am guessing. Could you advise more accurate maintenance numbers?

Why are the A3 TFSIs cheaper than the Golf Gtis? The Mark 5 just holding its money too well? The A3 TFSI is a bit of a sleeper in comparison?

Any idea how hard is the s-line ride compared to the Golf Gti?

The A3 2.0TFSI is a bit of a forgotten car. Whereas the Golf GTI has cred and is a well known hot hatch. It really is that simple. Plus the A3 2.0TFSI looks about as sporty as a zimmerframe whereas the Golf has GTI on it. Ride should be similar.

Maintenance wise... tyres are £400-600 a set, probably need on average a full set every 3 years so say £200 a year. Servicing probably evens out at £200-£250 a year. Then either a warranty at £400 a year or £1k tied up in a savings account?

The S-line suspension was harder when I compared them a 2/3 years ago, just try one and see if *you* think it's OK. The S-line did crash more over bumps.

Again, only consider a DSG model model together with a good warranty because problems could be very expensive.

Otherwise it's good choice, with near equal tuning potential and running costs.
