Is it only the 60gb PS3 in the UK that will play ps2 games?

Question in the title really, I really fancy picking up Twisted Metal Black again and my dad has a PS3 that is only used for videos really. I think it is an 80gig he has but will double check.

lol. so you can play any ps1 disc in your ps3 ? i did not know that

i have the 80 gig model, are you sure ?

Only for the correct region :p

NTSC PS1 games won't play on a PAL PS3 etc but as long as it's same region then it should be fine.

There's a compatibility list somewhere on the web, search google for it :p

Only for the correct region :p

So if its a pal copy of crash team racing make sure its a pal console :P

Has there ever been any more news of more ps2 emulation on the ps3 or am i right in saying all the good games are likely to get hd makeovers like gow collection.

Yes only the original PS3 will play PS2 games (the one with 4 USB ports and 60GB HD) however a second hand PS2 is really cheap to pick up so if you really want to play PS2 games do that.

I think some PS1 games can have issues working. I tried FF8 and it just crashed and wouldn't load.

Yes - Unlike the PS2 the PS1 reading in the PS3 is extremely dodgey. It can play MOST ps1 games - sort of trial and error - Also be very aware that the quality SUCKS. You will notice that a PS1 game on a PS2 (or better still and actual PS1) looks a hell of a lot nicer than on a PS3. PS3 makes them extremely pixelated and has a few rendering issues...

But, as I said, most of them do work.

(personally I have my PS2 set up next to my PS3 in case I want to play some PS2/1 games
- there's some fantastic multiplayer stuff whereas there's very few single screen PS3 MP out there - it's nearly all online which is stupid if you've got yer mates round :P)

It will also play ps1 games so when you get bored of twisted metal you can always get hold of crash team racing :P

2nd hand ps2's go for buttons on the bay aswell so its well worth a look.

Thanks for the replies, the girlfriend would kill me if I bought another console and it was really only to play twisted metal black :(

Could wait till the new Twisted Metal comes out on the PS3 Next year, or just get a pre owned PS2 there pretty cheap now.

I think one of the best things of having a PS3 being able to play PS2 games is the controller is wireless... I kinda wish Sony would bring out an official wireless controller for the original PS2, then i'd grab one for old times sake.. But as it stands there's no way i'm going back to a wired controller to play a PS2 title!
