I'm currently on a fork lift truck instructors course and the homework they've given us me tonight is to come up with a lesson plan for driving a counter balance fork lift truck around a basic course (two barrels) in reverse.

I can remember doing it in forward gear and know that the front wheels act as the pivot point for turning....does the same apply in reverse? do you have to get the back end out first and then swing it around when the back wheels get to the pivot point on the barrels? is the pivot point the same going forward and back?

any help would be appreciated as I've gone blank and I've got tonight to do it as the gf has the future mother law around and staying the night so i'm keeping myself busy on this :D

i would Imagen going backwards would be like driving a car and the pivot would be at the rear (or the middle if you count the length of the forks)

been a while since i last drove a flt (used to be a flt driver for wincanton many moons ago) but basically yes if i understand what your asking.

used to roll one of these badboys :)

Ask the women, as everyone knows, women are experts are manoeuvering motorised vehicles. :p

Yeah the piviot point still stays at the same place irrespective of the direction of travel.

+1

at the end of the course, park a brand new trailer so you can use the side of it as a brake...... (most flt drivers I encounter deem this normal practice! ) :D

The pivot point will still be the front wheels when going in reverse so align the wheels with the barrels...

What instructor course are doing?
Ive been an RTITB instructor for nearly 3 years now if you need any more info just ask :)

Also when coming to your practicle exam, watch that the intructor your teaching doesnt make mistakes on purpose (ie. sticking a leg out, no hand on steering etc...)
