Hi all.
I am looking at changing from my Intel Q6600 to an AMD Phenon II X6 1055T.

However, i am unsure as to what motherboard and memory options will suit my needs.

I am looking at preferably a black board as the case i have has a large side window and i would prefer to keep the colour scheme. This would also mean having red slots on the board. However, I haven't seen many in my price range that meet these.

Does anyone recommend any models in particular? I am looking at paying no more than ~£100

I am not sure what RAM to go for either. I have seen the G-Skill RipJaw sticks that do match the colour scheme, but these are quite expensive.

I currently use the spec in my sig, which include 8GB of DDR2 RAM. I'm not too sure how DDR3 RAM would equal that in performance though.

Overall, i don't really want to spend more than ~£350 if possible. Obviously if the colour scheme i am looking for is so rare that i will be paying a lot extra for that, taking away from investing in performance, then i am more than happy to go for a different board. But i would still prefer the actual board colour to be black, if possible.

Would anyone be able to recommend me any parts please?

Cheers :D

the pcb used in msi motherboards for amd are black, the slots for cards are blue, well atleast mine is.

Ah, yes. The MSI boards are nice.

Am i likely to see a worthwhile performance increase from the spec in my sig when gaming?

Also, would it be worth while thinking about going for an AM2+ board so that i do not have to change my RAM or will that just make the purchasing of an X6 CPU pretty much worthless?

If you got the money go for it, you know you want to :D. Seriously though i spent weeks in the same situation as you but am so glad i upgraded the lot, it handles everything i throw at it and i know that with ddr3 i wont have to worry about memory prices in the near future.

I have the money saved up to do it. I think i am going for;

AMD Phenon II X6 1055T

Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 AMD 880G

But i am not sure about the RAM. 8GB worth is a bit too expensive and will take me over my budget. I know that 6GB tri channel sets are for i7s but will they work as 2x2gb in dual channel and 1 in single channel and some of these kits are cheaper?

Or will 4GB of DDR3 provide a similar performance to 8GB of DDR2 (i doubt this to be the case)?

Thanks for the help :)

Aparrantly the board takes 1066, 1333 or 2000 (OC).
Should i go for the PC 1600MHz ones as the are around £20 on average?

Not sure which RAM to go for now :P. Once i decide that i am going to order it.
Want to get it ordered tonight

Good things to say about the Gigabyte 890GX (890PGA-UD3H). a popular choice is the Corsair XMS 12800C9, or the OCZ reaper 12800C6.

Basically, I'd go 890GX, or if it's in your budget, a 890FX board. GX will give 8x + 8x crossfire, the FX will give you 16x + 16x crossfire.

Yea, i saw that one. Looks nice but it is nearly double the one i am going to go for :p.

Once i have the memory, graphics card and sound card in, i won't be able to see the slot colours anyway. :)

Just the RAM i am stuck on :( soo much choice. I really like the look of the G-Skill RigJaw red ones.

Not really looking to crossfire to be honest. The board that i am looking at getting at the moment is 880G.
Is the RAM currently down to personal preference then, as they all seem to be boasting identical latency and voltage pretty much.

If you want red stuff, the Asus Crosshair is a great board btw. Stick in 4 gigs of ripjaw 12800C7 (barring any compatibility issues), that should give you a lot of room for overclocking while looking as red as it can be.

Total, £415. You will have to factor in a after market cooler (anything between £30 to £60 if you want top cooler of H50). So basically, £100 over budget :)

At this price, Intel solutions start to look attractive as well.

The more i look at the black(ish) and blue boards the more i like them. I do have half blue half red at the moment, so it is just as easy to go blue.

So i could get one of the Asus black and blue boards with the OCZ reaper memory you suggested.

i have the Thermalright TRUE Black 120 so i don't need a cooler.

The Asus Crosshair is a tad overkill for my needs. I don't intend to use crossfire, i will just upgrade to a single graphics card next so paying for 4x PCIe x16 slots is a bit of a waste on me.

Damn you. I have now decided to splash the extra cash for the Asus Crosshair :(/:)

Does this look OK?
Gonna order it now if yes.
