hi apple people.

my friend's wife is after a new laptop/ipad.

she has a very old notebook with is running windows xp

they have asked me to find them a laptop/ipad with a budget of around £550-£600

she only uses the laptop to browse the internet and do a bit of banking on it.

i have suggested a ipad as it is perfect for her.

with this in mind how does the ipad compare to similar priced laptop ?

i know the laptop will come with a dvd drive but from what im aware of that is the only difference in the 2.

since i have just got a iphone and absolutely love it i think the ipad is a good buy for her.

can someone please tell me the difference in the 2 and sell her the ipad for it's convenience.

If it's just for internet then i would go for the iPad (If she does not need it for windows programmes then why have such a large OS? And im sure she will enjoy all the APPS

Im kind of in the same boat, im not sure if i should get.

iPad
Android Tablet
Or a Windows 7 tablet

I just don't know :(

You've been asked for advice but it sounds very much like you are desperately trying to shove an iPad in their faces. Why not actually look at what they need rather than what you'd prefer they got? Otherwise they might never want to talk to you again :p

Just for the internet? Doesn't necessarily mean she'd be happy with an iPad, I know my wife wouldn't as she plays daft flash games and would miss Peggle too much. If either of them need word processing etc then it'd be daft to advise them to go for an iPad as a laptop of any description would be far more use.

This is a Mac friendly section but it's not about trying to convince friends of friends into buying hardware that's probably not suitable for their needs.

The iPad is a brilliant bit of kit, but it is a tad limiting.

He has a point about Flash, does she go on facebook? I know my wife loves them facebook games.

If she never uses flash then id still go for the iPad, just get a list of everthing she does on her netbook now and see how easy it would be to do on iPad.

Or just take her to an Apple store and when she sees it she will probably buy it anyway :p

funny you should say that as we have a new apple store opening in ipswich on the 11th of this month.

Your post stole my thunder and was on very similar lines to what I would have said. The OP says he has an iphone loves it and so his friends wife must be convinced into buying an iPad? Also what about USB etc. I think the iPad on it's own is too limited. As an addition to a digital home then fine but I wouldn't like to have that as my only PC/Mac replacement.

His friend may not be his friend for much longer if he insists on going down this route.

why do people think im trying to sell her the ipad ?

i just think it would be just want she needs and as for usb she wounldnt need one as she wont have a use for it.

let's forget about the ipad then and lets go down the route of a laptop ?

what laptop will tick all her box's ?

Have you been to an Apple store personally to test them both out. It's really hard to say if it will suit you well because everyone has different needs from an iPad. And remember it's the apps and not the iPad which judge whether it will be your kind of thing, and everyone's kind of thing is different!

I have an iPad.

For £500/600 I would would not get a toy.
An iPad is an accessory, its not a full blown thing like an laptop.

For web surfing the iPad is fine but the low memory really shows on some web-pages. Plus, no flash on the iPad does not mean its perfect for web-browsing!

I doubt many Banks allows IB on a mobile device. I know my bank, HSBC, does not allow it and it posses security risks! I rather do IB on a Laptop over a secure connection for the obvious reasons!

And why oh why spend £500/600 for something that will be used for surfing/banking???
You can get a pretty descent laptop which does that and a lot more for a lot less!
