Hi guys after 3 years of driving an astravan the time has come for me to get a "real" car.

After looking at various different options ive decided upon a Mondeo st220 on a 03-05 plate maybe be newer if price is right.

So my question is, things to look out for when buying? also what are the average running costs , servicing, fuel etc?

Ive set my budget at 6500 pushing to 7k if req :)

thanks.

Firstly, make sure you get a June 2003 or later one, this was the face lift and you'll get a much nicer centre console, a 6 speed gearbox and a few more shiny bits here and there.

You should very easily be able to get a face lift model for you budget a very good one at that.

Fuel costs are ok for what you get but it really depends what you compare it to. You'll get about 24mpg on average with mixed driving ...provided you don't boot it everywhere. On the motorway you can just about crack 30mpg on a good cruise and around town ...19-21mpg. The ST220 will vary a lot depending on how you drive it, if you open the throttle a lot then you'll use a lot more fuel, if not ...they are ok, about average for a V6 really.

Servicing ...couldn't tell you from experience as I didn't keep mine long enough to get it serviced, but at a guess I reckon £300 or so for a major service perhaps ...? ...there are plenty of people here who can tell you definitively though.

They are nice cars, superbly balanced for a fwd car and the steering is also very nice considering the fact that the wheels are also putting the power down. The interior is ok, perfectly acceptable and comfortable ...but if you are used to an Astra van then it'll be amazing I should think. The seats are good, nice comfy leather recaros that support in the right places and have adjustable lumbar. The exhaust note is fantastic, probably the best sounding 6 pot I can think of outside of the older Alfa V6s, it's intoxicating and is one of the best featureso pof the car imo.

Also, I think the saloons look better than the hatches, they just look classier and cleaner. That's personal preference though, hatches are far more common mind.

Great cars ;) Quick, comfy, reliable, well balanced if you fancy a hoon, and absolutely fantastic looks in my opinion.

Servicing costs with Ford are pretty reasonable tbh, so no real worries there. With my daily commute (70% motorway 30% town, ish) I average 26-27mpg. 32MPG on a long run. So not disastrous :)

Like my main man Moeks said, the exhaust note is wonderful. You'll find it addictive. I do. :D

And yes, you want a facelift (easy with your budget) of course. Things to look out for include dropping rear bumpers (they should sit against the rear lights, if there's more than about 5mm of clearance, it'll need fixing with foam pads), rear subframe bushes that wear out, and rust on the bottom of the doors (not so much with the facelift cars though). Other than that, they're pretty solid :)

I wish I still had mine right now. I had the best colour too, Ink Blue ...and it was a saloon ...none of this Performance Blue nonsense! :p

thanks for the replys guys now i just have the job of finding a decent one.

i also got told to listen for knocking on the engine as the top/bottom end can go on these ?

Things to look out for include dropping rear bumpers, rear subframe bushes

Are these massively expensive jobs if they occur ?

thanks again.

Not massively expensive, no.

Can't say I've heard of engine issues, no more than on any other car anyway!

Moeks.. Buy another one. You have no reason not to. :p

They can suffer lifter tick, it's not a serious problem but at idle some do make a ticking sound, this isn't unusual for a car with hydraulic lifters. Obviously if the engine is making any 'unusual' noises that you think it shouldn't ...walk away, but check a few out first so you know what you're looking at of course.

Hehe well I'd be lying if I said I had ruled it out :p ...for the costs involved, it's a stonking package, and I 'know' how good they are to drive.

Its difficult to find one of these in good condition, although with your budget it should be fine.

Loving mine and ive come from an S2000. The ST220 is really quite fantastic for the money.
