Time to retire the 4850......

I think it's now a good time to retire my trusty 4850.

It has been getting progressively worse over the past few weeks with games slowing down and despite a HSF upgrade a few months ago, it's also seems to be getting hotter on the newer drivers.

I mainly play BF:BC2, most settings on max and it's been handling it OK.

but due to updates to the game and newer drivers, it's starting to struggle on frame rates and the game crashes out a lot now (may not be card related).

So I'm thinking of getting one of these as it fits my budget.

anyone got one?

Not got one, but I'm in a similar situation as yourself.

From reviews that card is about the best 5770 out but the price is close to the bottom end GTX460's

I was going to get the MSI 5770 but have decided to wait and see what new cards come out later this year.

I did the same upgrade myself, and while the 5770 was faster it was not a significant jump in performance. A few months later I had the money to buy a 5850, even at stock they are fast but when overclocked they are great cards.

But the 460 GTX is closer to the price of the 5770 and is not far behind the 5850 in performance.

The 5770 isn't a huge step up from the 4850, you'll see a small improvement. The main thing is it should run cooler, quieter and require less juice to run. I'm still using my 4850 and thinking about changing soon, was initially looking at the 5770's but I feel it isn't worth the upgrade and the price isn't far off the GTX460 (Which seems a good card to upgrade to). So I'm holding out for either a 460 or 5850. But if you're budget is pretty strict, then the 5770 is in no way a bad card and the MSI looks pretty decent.

I'd try and squeeze a little more and stretch to the 460, I found overclocking the 5770 didn't yield much more performance and the 460's will scale very well from overclocking which will yield 5850 performance at least.

do what I did, buy your card (460 in my case) on the credit card, then when it arrives sell your 4850 (£40 maybe) and put the 40 back on to the credit card so it's not such an outlay to begin with. I'm in the process of selling my Zotac 260GTX and when it sells I will then not have paid much more than £100 for my 460

Agreed with the above posters, the performance boost from 4850 to 5770 is minimal. Up the budget for a GTX 460 and you'll have quite a nice performance increase.

If you want to stick with ATI then the 5850 is your best bet. But in my opinion the 460GTX is the better buy with the 1 gig version being around the 170 mark.

Fitted the monster of a card at the weekend and re-installed win7 x64.

so far very impressed, even to the point of re-installing crysis to have another play on that, has done the trick.

As for BF:BC2, the change from dx10 to dx11 is very noticeable and very nice, runs very smooth.
