50MB Virgin Media

That figure would mean something if you where switching to another adsl service but not cable as it works differently. Adsl depends on line length so that number matters but virgin have repeaters at the cabinets of each street which supply enough power down the line for the end house to be in the optimum power levels and any house nearer will see an increased power level and thus have to have a attenuator fitted to reduce this. Cable also runs on a completely different network to adsl.

Read the OP please. Thanks...

Nope but there has been reports of people reviving letters from virgin telling them to stop using as much i believe the figure was somewhere around 300 gigs but it was probably done during the day as I have done in excess of 300 gigs a month with out such a letter.

People believe that was only towards members with the 10 and 20Mbps package.

Also, your VM could slow down in the evening if you're over subscribed.

Basically it's when there are too many VM users on the shared headend equipment you'll be connected to. As PistolPete has said, there's no way really to know unless you check the local area. TBH I wouldn't worry about it, the 50mb service doesn't seem to suffer from over-subscription as it works in a different way to the lesser services (docsis 3 you've seen mentioned).

As long as op is not in a student area all should be well.

Is fibre optic the way to go as I might update or is it just a gimmick?

I just have regular bethere internet.

I got 50mb 2 days ago and have been getting 50mb pretty consistently.

Transfer speeds reaching 6mb/s even during busy periods.

Fiber optic wires have a lower latency and higher bandwidth than copper although the higher bandwidth is irreverent atm. You may also want to know all fiber optic services are only fiber optic to the cabinet at the end of your street and copper after that.

Not exactly copper, but Coaxial. Better than the standard BT copper wire used for phones and ADSL.

Coaxial can supply quite a high bandwidth as it is. Virgin are already trialling 100mb and are going to start 200mb soon.

They should maybe spread that broadband out a little.
There going to be trialing 1tb internet someday soon lol.

Whats the point with only a few hundred thousend customers they just keep upgrading the same areas over n over again.

Slowly turning into bt -_-

leaving people out man i hate it.

Costs too much money to dig up the roads to lay new cable.

Virgin will probably end up using FTTC and then copper to the home like BT Infinity is starting to use. Only feasible way to open up their network (broadband anyway, not sure how the TV service would work with that).

Its fibre to the street cabinet then coaxial to from the cabinet to the house.

Virgin supply a modem and router with their broadband packages.

So I can't use my £150 netgear router which I just bought

I bet the VM modem doesn't have good wifi range

I'm pretty sure you should be able to use your Netgear router... I hope so - I plan on keeping my Netgear when I make the move.

You should be able to use your own router I think. You just need to use Virgins modem and plug that into your router of choice.
