Desire or Galaxy S

You edited your post with the froyo bit afterwards.

And yes you did say they they were little tweaks, I was pointing out that they weren't and did include a 'proper' update.

To clear this up, Samsung have a bad reputation for not supporting their handsets in the past however it looks like currently with the Galaxy S things are improving.

I'd say thats a fair comment.

The same was said of HTC until now, they're supporting far better.

they all have improved andriod is a gold pot and now outselling others, they will wanna make sure there name and brand is established in this new era of mobiles.

Thanks for the input guys, was in the phone shop today and tried the galaxy S, very very nice phone, they didn't have any Desire's (apparently really hard to get hold of...) but my impression of the galaxy was good, felt nice in my hand and good to use, and that screen is just brilliant!

how-ever, for me to get a contract doesn't appear to be straight forward as i thought it would be.
I have a current contract on o2 under my dads name and my own bank details (was under 18 when i took the contract out). Now i want to keep the number but want it under my name. So i can't just upgrade the contract, I need to take out a new one because it is under a new name. This is fair enough I guess, the problem is with keeping my number. For me this is essential as changing my number would cause so many problems giving everything going on at the moment for me!
So i was told i needed a PAC number which o2 could supply, and I was under the impression that I got the PAC number and then that was that basically.
But from what I gathered from o2 customer services, I get the PAC number, then I need to do something with a PayAsYouGo sim card, then take out the contract (using the PAC code) and be given a temperory phone number then I need to phone customer services to change the numbers?? I have no idea if this is accurate or not, its what I picked up from CS and I can't make sense of it.

I have got a PAC number now, but no idea what next...

Another thing I got told was that my contract didn't finish on the 5th as I thought, because nobody has ever told me that I needed to give them 30th days notice to end the contract, so its going to run on another month

Hope some of that made sense, lol

My opinion -

I looked at both phones, and while hardware wise the Galaxy is probably better I hated the "touch" buttons on the bottom, I found they felt un-responsive when compared to having actual buttons on the Desire. Also the phone was big but very light, it made it feel cheap and almost like a toy.

The Desire has a good weight and has actual buttons on the bottom so you wont faff about. An added bonus is that trackball built in. Its really cool :D!

The Desire does not have a trackball, but does have 'actual' buttons.

The Nexus One does have a trackball, but does not have 'actual' buttons.

What.

I was recently told the same thing by O2 CS regarding transferring to a PAYG SIM when I wanted to put my girlfriend's number in my name (for staff discount reasons). However I spoke to someone else and they said just get the PAC code, go into the shop and order a new contract using it. I did this about two weeks ago and the number transferred no problem so it seems the PAYG step is no longer needed.

Thanks for the info. Was the number transfer instant, or did you still need the temporary number?

surely the sony LED screen on the new desire's puts it right out of the running for you lot ?

nexus one has to be considered over it. oled screen , less hassle to upgrade for everyone , noise cancelling , generally just better support.

It may be considered over it by some people, but for the general public, they will want the Sense UI.

I think the N1 costs a bit more too.

Hasn't the nexus one been discontinued now?
