Should I get an Ipad?

How long does the device last when using it on MiFI? Someone mentioned 4 Hours on a full charge.

How long do you get?

With the 3900mAh battery it lasts about 12 hours (ish).
with the 1500mAh battey you are looking at about 4 hours.

The main thing, is not 'finding' a reason you want it, because you kinda do as you've said. Like with an iPhone, you start using stuff you never would have thought you would because you own it and it's possible, but if anyone asked me before what I wanted from it I'd just say the iPod and phone applications. But it does so much more for me now. But hey thats just me!

If anything, get it, dont get on? ebay it. You shouldnt make too much of a loss on it.

I have been sitting at work today and we got talking about apple kit. Personally I haven't really been a big fan of Apple after my second gen ipod didn't last 5 minutes and my nano broke just as fast but the techie inside of me which is saying "get the damn thing fool".

Now before I wonder off to the apple store and grab one (if I can). I think that I need some reassurance and convincing from some Ipad owners/fans out there. Currently I have a netbook, laptop, desktop and smartphone (pre) and was thinking, "what would use the Ipad for" and to be honest I can't answer the question. My current devices do everything that I need but I still think that I want one.

So overclockers talk me into or out of buying an Ipad.

This post is very reminiscent of a kid outside a sweetshop don't you think?

You already have devices that will do everything the iPad will and lots more besides. If you're honest this is a case of the "must have next new shiny toy". The very fact you're asking others to make the decision for you kind of proves my point. I would do what others have suggested - sleep on it, for at least a month and look at it again. That's what I do if I'm not sure about something and I tend to find that at the end of the month the voice of reason inside of me telling me to wait was right and I end up not buying.

Not really, no, it's reminiscent of a guy thats got a few quid to spend, doesn't want to upgrade his pc and was thinking about buying some new tech; namely an Ipad

To me its the equivilant of looking at a few reviews before buying any bit of kit, except I was asking in an apple forum where I was pretty sure a few people had Ipads and probably a good few were in my situation when deciding to purchase.

If it was "must have" I would have not asked the forum, I would have bought one without the pearls of knowlege available in here ;)

Just to clarify, I wasn't at any point asking somebody else to make a decision for me, I am quite capable of doing that myself. However contributions to the thread could well sway me into or away from purchasing the device.

Out of interest... what sort of battery times are people getting from the non 3g models?

Nice the battery time is pretty good and it looks like there are plenty of apps out there for some ruby on rails development as well.

Anybody been doing any development on the ipad?

If you are the kind of person who likes to be able to quickly check their e-mail or load up a YouTube video on the go when bored, but find the iPhone (despite being an amazing device) a bit too small for a long train journey, and a laptop too troublesome to carry around, then there you go! I've always considered it to be targeted towards a more specific audience, and I guess it is. But whatever that audience is, it does it very well! Other situations I can think of would be showing off photos to the family, following a cooking recipe on YouTube in the kitchen etc. Sometimes I wake up and I wanna check something quick, but browsing on my smartphone is a bit fiddly, while I'm too lazy to grab my laptop. In this case, an iPad would be ideal :)

The iPad is nothing on its own. It's the apps that make it what it is.

Your laptop will do everything that the iPad can do.
Your laptop will also do a whole bunch more!

If your looking for reasons to buy one by asking here then there's clearly not a need for it.

You don't need it. You want it ;)

If you got money to burn on a new toy then go for it but its not going to give you anything new other than a fashion accessory.
Its your money- if it makes you happy then go for it!

Don't most of thte YouTube vids not play due to the flash restriction?
I do run into issues with videos not working 'this video is not available on the ipad' but i thought that was due to the resolution of the video or something but hell do i know ;)

using youtube in "desktop" full mode renders 90% of videos unplayable on the iPad due to limitations put on by Steve Jobs

As a consumption device I think it's great. It's fantastic for kicking back on the sofa and watching movies and I love reading comic on it. If you do a lot of travelling it really comes in to it's own.

That's very much my view of the iPad. It's a consumption device - photos, books, video, web browsing, email, the odd game. For those purposes, bar the lack of Flash, it works pretty well - in fact, probably better than anything else available. But I wouldn't want to create content on it - not more than the odd email, anyway. There's no way it can replace a laptop as a productivity tool. It's not designed to.

if you liked being shoveled BS.

anyway...ipad. i wanted one, i played with one, i decided it was a bad replacement for the netbook i have in my house (which turns on and browses the net within 5 seconds - much the same time as the ipad), so never brought one.

i can see how people may want one, but for the price and the small minor benefits the form factor brings to computing - i really think there just an expensive waste of space.

if rumours are true apple will be refreshing them anyway soon and maybe bringing out a smaller model - so probs best to wait especially if your in limbo now.

a lot of those points are true tho, I havnt used one model device work well with flash. The battery thing is a given.

Really tho, this is more down to adobe, for years they have done nothing for the mobile brousing devices, no Flash light that they talked about, or fixing the hundreds of bugs in the current versions.

Personally I've always found flash players the absolute bain of brousing, and would be happy to see it go, or push adobe into pulling their thumb out.

Utter BS!
Thats nothing more than brainwashing which the fanboys love!
This is from the same people that gave us copy & paste in 2009.

No flash on a 2010 device!! FFS! Get with the times Apple!

Arguably they're ahead of the times. I'm not saying that's a good thing, but they're ignoring flash in the hope that HTML5 takes over from it.

I'm hoping Frash development comes along well to be honest. It'd be nice to have the option of installing flash on iOS devices.

Guys, Flash works on Android devices just fine.

Let this guy enlighten you:

That guy in the video says it all. *** the guy in the video says far too much, do not post links to videos with lots of swearing ***

And please don't say Apple are ahead of the times!

Heres one example:
They wount even let my iPad communicate with my iPhone or let them communicate with my PC via BlueTooth even though they both got bluetooth. But Apple in their wisdom only allows them to communicate with headsets.

My 7yr old Nokia communicates with other phones and my PC just fine over bluetooth.

Is that technological advancement?

Tho whole bt thing is part and parcel the reason they had drm on iTunes for so long, it's in the agreements to have the big labels albums on iTunes, they are the ones that imposed large lock downs their music being pairated and shared.

And I've had droit devices, yea it works, kills the battery and is very buggy and just slow.

Even better tho, I just got an email back from Apple I sent on your behalf, they checked the list of names and they said that you name was not on the list for people that where held at gunpoint to go buy one, so think your in the clear!

They could have limited DRM to music. They could have still had it so it shared pictures/files etc.

I wouldn't get an iPhone 4 anyway. I prefer to spend £500 on a device that does not need bumpers to work ;)
