hi there,

a friend has 2 young children and has asked me for ways to protect them against adult porn images and sites.

they have a desktop and a laptop

what is the best way I can do this?

is there specfic software to control against these things? or do I block things from the router? if the router, then what, how, when , why and who?

any help would be appreciated

thanks in advance

that seems great...

does signing up for a free account allow blocking of all adult content? or do you only benefit once you pay?

please clarify I cannot find that out from their site..

cheers

Windows Live Family safety will do the same but allow them to request access to websites if needed and allow you to see reports on what they've been browsing and what programs they've used etc.

Kaspersky Internet Security has a fantastic parental control feature allowing you to limit what sites your children go onto we have in stock now , the best option would be to go for KIS 2010 1 user but if you have more than one pc then KIS 3 would be the better choice. Please see below :-

You really should stop passing your responsibility onto a piece of software.
No piece of software or "special service" will offer 100% protection.

Young kids should not be allowed on the internet unsupervised.

If you honestly think you can install some software or sign up to a service and your kids will be totally safe online you're being extremely naive.

No one is saying that such software replaces the job of a responsible parent in supervising a kid on the Internet. It merely assists them in controlling what content can be accessed on said PC.

The easiest way is to get an OpenDNS account and change your DNS server to OpenDNS's. :)

You can set which categories you allow (e.g. chat, im, torrent) inside your account and can also black and whitelist individual websites.

You can set it up on your computer, router or both, if you want to.

If you have a dynamic IP.

I second that I set it up for a few different people... works a treat.

I know this isn't a "tech" solution, but it might be a good idea to sit down and have a chat with your kids in a quiet moment and warn them about making friends online. Don't arrange to meet people in real life without telling you, don't send pictures of yourself online etc.

Of course that's more appropriate for younger kids, and dealing with unsavoury characters online than it is for dealing with teenagers and porn (for example). It might also be a good idea to put the PC in a public room. My parents did that when I was in my early teens and it made it considerably harder to get a decent look at some smut. ;)

I tend to think you can only "protect" kids from unsavoury content when they are young enough to stumble on it by accident. Once they actually want to go looking for it, they'll find a way to do so in my experience.

Software solutions arn't the real solution. Can be bypassed rather easy if the child knows abit about pcs. Hardware control is the best method really.

As few people have said open dns will work a treat because it can be controlled from anywhere online because of the way the dns responds. Brilliant for been free.

Alough if they have a tad knowledge on routers on how to log in and change things then theres still a possible chance it can be bypassed. Good luck though.

when my kids were young, i used to use a dedicated web browser called kid rocket http://kidrocket.org/

this will only let them have access to approved sites for kids.
they cannot go to other parts of the net and is very good

edit. forgot to say its also free

Your children should be running in standard accounts anyway, so they wont be able to edit network settings on the machine. Your router, of course, has a suitably complex and extremely secret password. As does your administrator account.

Parental software/settings should only be an aid. It prevents children from accidentally accessing inappropriate websites or content, but you should still be in the room with them at all times, especially if you know your kid likes tinkering.

i don't see the problem, i got my hands on porn waaaay earlier (comparatively) then most kids (since i was seven), hasn't affected me in the slightest.

That's always the issue with DNS stuff, it doesn't take much knowledge to work out how to reset a router.
