What would you take on a holiday

So I guess the point is don't take a laptop if you are absent minded but otherwise they can be very handy. The car carries the bag, if you even keep it in its own special bag that is.

You take a laptop because it suits the way you travel, equally it doesn't suit lots of other people or the way they travel. I'm aware that I'm stating the blindingly obvious but if you're going to suggest the only reason not to take a laptop is because the person is absent minded then I figure I might as well spell it out.

Or buy and iPad

And take that - less weight and does the stuff you need it to ;)

I said that only as he specifically said about losing it. Besides my comments are as a result of the contempt shown by some at the concept of taking one - one guy even said it was for nerds - not that everyone should take one.

I'd never take a laptop. It's good to be away from the internet for a while. Also, they aren't very light and if you travel like me (I like to carry just one bag) then they are a pain. Most hotels have business centres nowadays which you can use if you really need to.
Not of all us can afford cars either :(.

Oh that's why you were getting defensive, fair enough.

Yea that's better than just using your laptop on hotel WiFi

You might be in hotels/hostels without WiFi, camp sites, boats and trains. Then again you might not be on an expedition and know exactly where you are staying.

Can you imagine people manage(d) to travel around the world without even a mobile.

So it's horses for courses and we all don't need to take the kitchen sink with us. Get a life and travel without one, you won't die.

People used to travel without a phone or a plane or a car should I get a life and travel without those too?

Surely the fact one is travelling in a foreign country indicates that getting a life is something they don't have much trouble with?

I find a laptop hugely useful when travelling and not a hindering thing in anyway. It even has a seperate bag allowance on a flight! This doesn't make me a nerd.

I think it's swings and roundabouts - it's great to have the great wide web 'on tap', so you can tripadvisor every stop, urbanspoon every restaurant and make sure that you can come home content that you stayed in what is considered the best place for the budget and extracted every single possible mote of value from your trip.

But then, there is value too in a dog-eared out of date Rough Guide, where you turn up and the hostel burnt down forcing you to go into a bar with a sob story and end up getting steaming drunk with the staff and sleeping on a pew in the bar, or going to a restaurant knowing nothing about it only the creaking sign and being blown away by the service and food quality.

I wonder sometimes whether all these comparison sites and easy access to a compilation of thousands of past opinions at your fingertips for every establishment, you can sometimes miss the appeal of the serendipitous encounter. But equally you no doubt reduce the likelihood of the horror story happening so back to the aforementioned playground apparatus :)

I'd really rather not, the iPad seems to fall between two stools for me, not quite as useful as an ordinary laptop or even a netbook (since I prefer a physical keyboard generally) and too bulky compared to a phone. I'm sure it's a wonderful thing and like manna from heaven will satisfy me in ways I'd only dreamed about but I'm still not sold on the idea.

I see your problem now, it's from people making absolute statements but I don't find the solution to that is to make more absolute statements since the real answer usually seems to lie somewhere in between the two extremes.

I'd rather go out and about and talk to the locals. Though most hotels have a computer you can use. The last thing I want to do is using a laptop on holiday - I have more important things to do, such as relaxing!

But then again it does depend on what you want from your holiday. If you like getting an itnerary and a full plan then I can see why a laptop is handy... but I like to wing it, and have a rough idea. Especially in NY or SF other than the fact I know them well enough, I like to explore and find things out for myself or talk to the locals. I don't feel compelled to know all the intricacies of my area I'm staying in.

Certainly for beach holidays, I don't even take my mobile with me, I leave it at home or hotel or wherever I am.

However everyone is different. I like to get away from the internet and rely on non technology. I can buy tickets just like everyone else from box offices and other such things. I'm not reliant on the 'net and in fact welcome being offline for 2 weeks.

wow this reply is just a look at me i can pretend to be happy without using my laptop for a 2 weeks thread.

Holiday, i cant even remember the last time i could afford to go or take one so if i did i 1stly wouldn't be sitting on a beach as it bores me.

sight seeing etc with a phone and laptop in hotel room if i needed it.. no big deal

The internet is not some kind of mystic luxury like it was in the 1990s - its normal..

And don't forget we don't all work in IT 24/7 thus feel the need to un-tether ourselves from the net.

Wind your neck back in sweetie you're being daft.

I don't see how you got "look at me" from my post. I said everyone has different needs from their holidays and some people find it useful to take a laptop, others a burden - I'm one of the latter people. Furthermore, I don't work in IT, but I just don't need the internet on holiday - is that not acceptable?

I'm just sharing my perspective if I may? Please? Thanks. :)
