Just hooked up my PS3 to 1980p PC monitor for a bit of Grand Theft Auto 4 action (PC version keeps crashing). I have never really considered myself a graphics snob, but wow... Blown away by how poor the PS3 version looked compared to my Radeon 4870 PC version! It's not even like this is a bang up to date card, and I have by no means had the visuals turned upto max. Needless to say, PS3 version turned off after 10mins.

Right. Off to try and fix my PC versions constant BSODs...

LOL the PS3 graphics hardware was designed around 2004 on the then current nVidia GPUs. The great thing about PC gaming is we can get to upgrade the gfx cards for new gaming :)

I was playing gta4 the other day on the pc and I set it to 800*600 and turned on motion blur, and it looked just like the ps3 version. I think it's funny when you hear ps3 fanboys going on about how awesome it will be when they "unlock the power of the core" but by the time they realise that "the core" sucks the ps4 will be released.

lol @ your ignorance.

It's actually called the Cell and I don't think anyone in the console threads has said that consoles are much better graphically than PC's because it just isn't true. Add that to the fact that the PS3 version of GTA4 is by far the ugliest and very poorly optimised.

I have both systems and both versions of the game. It looks better on the PC but is very demanding. When I played it, I had a dual-core CPU and it drove me mad, then I played the PS3 version and ended up finishing it. GTA4 is a bad example of what the PC can do and also a bad example of what the PS3 can do. In general, I actually think the gap between the 2 systems is too close. I'm often surprised at how good many PS3 games look, even though that's not what I buy them for and underwhelmed at some PC versions because they could be so much better but they don't bother to make the PC verison separately from the console versions.

A £250 console can play it fine, it would cost you that just for the GPU to play it acceptably on PC. It serves its purpose, go play Uncharted 2 or Killzone 2 THEN say the graphics suck.

One of the reasons I love PC gaming is that for sheer gaming power, noting beats a high end PC. I saw the demo of Fallout New Vegas from E3 recently played on the 360, and it's graphics did look poor compared to what I would expect from a good PC. But then, a console will cost a good deal less than a good PC.

Might be getting a cast off PS2 soon, and will be intriqued to give it a go as I've never used a console before. I've always thought those little controllers look wierd! :p

In all fairness, you need to compare the best-of-breed PS3 games to the PC for a decent comparison. This would be MGS4, Uncharted 1 + 2 and Killzone 2 (don't know which other games you could add to that list).

I have MGS4 and Uncharted 1/2 and these compare favourably to a previous generation (e.g. ATI 4000 or Nvidia 200 mid-range GFX card), especially when played on a 42" screen. However, you can still notice jaggies and slowdowns on the PS3 which are quite annoying if you are a high-end PC gamer.

I think GTA 4 for the PC is very badly optmised btw. Any game properly optimised for the PC that is released cross-platform today, will outclass the PS3 (and X360) version's graphics with little effort.

I think the Cell processor is a very capable chip. Its powerful in its own way. But its coupled to an aging GPU. But for £250 the PS3 is an ok machine. But you know when you buy into consoles that the GPUs will grow old compared to ever upgadeable PCs

The graphics suck

i got a ps3, just use it to play footie, sometimes world at war for the zombie game, but i use it as a blu ray player as well... more than i use it for games i use it for movies and watching downloaded movies and tv series.

pc is pure maching for converting and using for my work. i play a few games but not many. guess when i get my new build running i`ll put on a game to see how blown away i`ll get... :D

Gaming on PCs is a cut above console gaming visually. No one can deny this.

Nobody has, but the OP seems to think that this isn't the case and seems to think that "fanboys" have said otherwise even though if you look through the console forum for the past few months at least, there is no mention of this sort of thing. :)

Not only that, but he's comparing a £250 entertainment machine to high end PC's. My graphics card alone cost more than my PS3, that's like comparing a Ferrari to a Corsa.

Yawn @ These threads, had both consoles, got rid of my 360 however as i needed Blu-Ray more, both more or less the same graphics wise. Only differences in consoles is one has blu ray and one doesnt
