Free Solar Panels worth £10k+

I heard the R4 interview the other day too. It seemed decent to be perfectly honest. Ok the company takes all the money for 25 years, but it essentially means ~40% of your electricity is free, and you don't have to worry about huge installation/maintenance bills.

Well companies are out to make money, they won't do it unless there's something in it for them - It does however make Solar more accessible for people. The only problem is the 25 year 'contract' that's tied to the roof.

Of course they are making money, but I fail to see who loses out. It doesn't cost the consumer a penny, they just give permission for the company to stick the panel on the roof and take the money, and you get cheaper electricity from the power it generates. Surely this is win/win?

Just wish our house wasn't west facing. Then again, we have hipped ends, so maybe enough room on the south hip for the panels... how much room do they need?

Of course they won't do it if they don't make profit. But they're taking the FIT money from the government, and you're getting ~40% of your electricity for free, so I don't really see the problem with the 25 year contract.

What happens if you get it then 10 years later move house and the new owners don't want solar panels for 15 years?

The company takes back the panels, refurbs them if possible, and uses them elsewhere?

Nope - I think the new owners need to agree to having them installed. Not sure how this is enforced... even if it were added to the deeds of the house its debatable if it could be enforced...

That's the company's problem though if it's not enforcable, they are the ones losing out.

The only issue for yourself if whether you think it would be easier or harder for you to sell your house.

I'm pretty sure it would be easier as who wouldn't want 40% off their electric bill?

If you pay for nothing (installation, maintenance etc) and you get your 20%-40% of free electricity through the whole 25years then I can only see this as a win win situation.

It all depends now how sleek it looks.

I pay about £400 p/y for electricity therefore I could potentially save about £150-£170, while this doesn't look like much it is still free money for having something fitted to your roof for 25 years.

After everything I'm not sure if this is worth all the hassle.

we are going for it, huge roof, not overshadowed, internal access, and we spend easily 2k on leccy a year. They are coming to see us, will let you know if the small print looks ok.

bugger would have done this wth my house. its about time they gave people good incentives to switch to renewables.
