Blackberry 9800 Bold Slider

Oh, sure - sorry I wasn't clear, was thinking about the thing as a whole at that point.

Main thing that bothers me is the phone not picking up changed made in GMail from a computer - that may be pretty annoying being as I am a heavy GMailer. Hmm.

Yeh well it seems to work in America/Canada as ive read peoples networks over there have initiated 2 way synch...whereas over here i dont think its been implemented...i was told that the BIS service here is on 3 whereas overseas its on 3.1 which gives it 2 way synch.

Personally i use gmail for everything as well but since having my BB the past 2 yrs i havent really needed to log onto gmail myself on a pc unless i need to.

Anyhow im more chuffed that my 9700 will be getting OS6 so i dont think ill be getting the 9800 torch as much as i like it...main reason being is that its the first BB with OS6 so i dont think, reading from the reviews that its been optimised as the web browsing is still a bit slow due to the measly processor...hopefully next yr RIM will put in meatier and faster cpu's into BB's then i will look into upgrading. But at the moment im gonna hang onto my 9700 for a bit longer, put OS6 on it as soon as its released.

I think that's the conclusion I'm coming to - Torch looks very nice but needs a 2nd revision.

I think my next upgrade with be a 9700 (or the rumoured 9780) and then think about it in another 18 months or so...!

You might as well wait for the 9780 if your going to look at the 9700...should be out by end of the yr:)....it will ship with OS6 with more ram so will be much smoother i imagine...i dont expect OS6 to run all that well on my 9700 tbqh mainly due to the lowe RAM 256mb compared to the 512mb that the 9780 will ship with.

OMG, just watched the video in HD on CrackBerry and the Torch looks amazing, wasn't to sure on the older leaked pictures but it looks very polished now. OS6 also looks very smooth and way more functional.

Playing with one here, its not too bad. Could be early software release but interface is jerky/laggy. Handset has a solid feel to the build though, I don't think it is as good as WebOS on the Palm Pre or Android - but that could just be down to maturity.

So OS6 is definately coming to 9700 at some point?

Nothing is 110% definite but according to RIM it will be made available for the 9700...now its just down to the networks to test it and release it...might be some time before we see a leak although theres every chance that it could be out sooner. #

But keep in mind that OS6 wont run all that well on the 9700 due to the RAM.

Anyhow i shall be having a play with my brothers 9800 which hes bringing over from Canada so ill post up my own thoughts about it but reading crackberry review...its not all that great which is a shame...but i guess its to be expected as its the very first OS6 device being released so probably needs time to mature and im sure it will when they optimise OS6 later on.

Yea as I said above I just got sent a 9800 Torch by RIM, not overly impressed. Laggy interface, not as intuitive as Android/iPhone/Palm but the build quality of the phone itself is impressive.

The web browsing is very slow, the pinch zoom is painful and the rotating is very sudden/messy (no nice transitions or slickness about it at all).

It looks like my Blackberry 8900 Curve won't be getting an update to OS 6 but I don't really care about that because I now due for an upgrade anyway.

Having looked at the videos of the 9800 Slider, it does look a good phone, one that will suit my needs, I may get this phone only if it is free on an 18 month contract (I may think about £50), If the networks charges any more than that, then I may think twice.

If I do go for this phone, how good will those specifications look compared to other phones over the next 18 months? That is something else i'm thinking about. The Windows Phone 7 phones look quite attractive too.

As it stands, the 9800 Slider is my number one choice at the moment, only just.

Well having had the 9800 slider myself this weekend to play with, i have to say its a very slick device...its not as smooth as i thought it would be perhaps due to the fact that its a pre-dev device that my brother has as im using his but i can see OS6 becoming much better and smoother one devices after the 9800.

Its a very well built device that much is for sure...absolutely rock solid and hardly any play in the slider mech which was my fear originally. The battery life on it is simply superb, another thing the BB's excel at recently ie my 9700 is pretty rock solid.

The only thing im disappointed with is the speed...the cpu reallky should have been jacked up as it does slow down and lags a bit...its not as smooth as the videos make it out to be. But on the plus side...my god OS6 is a breath of fresh air...much more intuitive and user friendly...its definitely a step in the right direction for RIM/BB. Keyboard as usual is second to none and the touch screen is nice, no longer is it that stupidly annoying click screen tech so about time RIM decided to do a proper touch screen device.

Personally i wont get one as my 9700 is getting OS6 so ill just whack that on and see how it plays out but im looking forward to the next set of devices that will run OS6...they probably will be much better as this is sort of a guinea pig type of phone...its not perfect but its pretty damn good for someone who wants a high quality BB device but isnt interested in the other models. But i do like it though, not a big fan of sliders myself but this is one sexy device.

Our Blackberry salesman came in with one of these yesterday and having 30 mins of playtime with it I'm not overly impressed.

Build quality is absolutely superb of course. Its just feels like its been put together correctly.

However it felt laggy, in fact very laggy at times. It also didnt feel like it flowed very well either but maybe thats just me.

3 things massively let it down for me though:

The screen res is shockingly low, I didnt realise it was 480x360 until yesterday. Very poor from RIM imo & an opportunity missed here.

The web browser is still awful, slow, unresponsive and the pinch / zoom feature was a lottery as to whether it worked or not.

Didn't like the keyboard one bit. Just didn't feel right at all when extended.

Of course this was a pre-release sample but considering how close it is to release I would have thought it would have been better than it actually was.

Here's hoping RIM work some miracles with over the coming weeks prior to it being released.

Realistically how long does the battery last? Nightly charging, 1.5 days?

Can you use the hard keyboard with one hand or does it feel unbalanced? Is the keyboard as good as the 9700?

Anyone know if RIM are planning on releasing another proper Blackberry with OS6, or are they just sticking with the 9700 for know?

I was definitely going to get one of these but the speed and battery life are the 2 things worrying me. On the other hand, i could get one and if I don't like it flog it on eBay for a mint and get a 9700 sim free with change

Battery life is superb i find but it depends on how much you use ie loads of calls, texts or email as that will have an effect on the battery but i thought the battery on it was pretty decent....possibly 1.5 days out of it again depending on your useage...i get around 1.5days on my 9700 and thats with pretty hard useage.

Nope the phone feels pretty balanced to me as i like using the keyboard...definitely not a fan of touchscreen keyboards in all honesty....very well built.

Of course RIM will be bringing out a shedload of other devices with OS6:confused:...OS6 is going to be their main OS for the time being.

The 9700 will get OS6 but it wont be great in all honesty due to the low ram ie 512mb will be on new devices running OS6 and the 9700 only has 256mb.

There wil be the 9780 which is a 9700 but with 512mb of RAM and 5mp camera probably out end of the year...might as well hang on for that really as that will run OS6.

Looks like ill be getting the 9800 as well, my bro has managed to get one sent to me but wont have it till end of August....dont know if ill keep it or sell it...im hoping it will be unbranded so if i decide to sell it i can get a bit more money.

I'll give you a tenner for it!!! :)

Might go up to a Pony!!.. :D

I recon it'll all be sorted on release!.. no Lag etc... they can't release a dog on they're first OS6 model!.. it'd be suicide!!.. :o

Any Idea on what the price might be yet?

At the moment it looks like buying a blackberry sim free in Ireland is the cheapest option almost.

Specially since with O2 the 9700 is 299 with a 60 euro contract.
Lord knows what this will cost or when we might even see it. :(

BOLD 9700 running OS6

A video of the 9700 Bold running OS6...looks awesome and pretty impressed as i was under the impression that it may be a 'watered' down version or OS6 would run like a pig on the 9700.

Looking forward to the first leak of OS6 for the 9700...should tide me over till the next batch of BB phones with OS6 is out;
