Hi there, this is my first time posting in this section of the forum... last week I had my first try at concert photography for a local festival in Moray, Scotland called Speyfest.

I really enjoyed the experience here are some of the shots I got:

After I had taken the shots a local paper got in touch asking to use them in a big feature article on the event. They said there would be no budget available for the shots, but that I would get a prominent credit. The paper came out today and there is no credit printed anywhere... which I am a little bit annoyed about!

Do the more experienced photographers here have any advice on if I should complain etc

Any feedback or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Don't burn bridges with what may be of use to you in the future (be it financial, reputation, etc), but ask for credit in the following week's paper or something and if they play hardball, there's a nice, simple way to get them on your side - send an invoice.

Great photos! Sharp, well exposed and captured a nice set of expressions!

To be honest I would get in touch with the paper - but you can't really expect them to be able to do anything about it now :( .

Also, don't give it away for free if you can help it, other local photographers who covered the event be a bit annoyed if they find out the paper have used your stuff for free. (even if a credit was given- you should at least ask for the "standard rate" if you don't have your own or don't know what they tend to pay out)

The "standard rate" is "no budget" because of people like the OP who get suckered (no fault of his/her own)
by liars on picture desks blagging free UGC - user generated content - from hapless photographers who are
desperate to be "published" so they can tell all their mates, with little regard for anyone but themselves.

Lesson learned, Colourjam.

If there's a next time tell them if they want the pics they have to pay. No pay, no pics, no exceptions.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Ends up I did have a credit (my dad must need new glasses!)... so all is good.

I have tried to get payment from this paper before but they just point blank refuse and would basically mean the difference between having the photos printed or not. It's a good event so I don't mind them getting the benefit of any shots printed.

I used a Canon 70-200f2.8L IS II for the pics... wasn't sure of it to start with but at the end of the 4th day of shooting I was won over - amazing lens.

Thats what I was trying to say colourjam - I was just trying to be a little more subtle!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

"No pay, no pics, no exceptions." thats the important bit.

"with little regard for anyone but themselves...." thats the other bit to consider!

re newspaper....if you still have emails from them saying that they will credit you, ask them to write an appology in next issue or just send them an invoice :)
