How much could you drop on photography without thinking about it

If you can afford it, 2.8. Because eventually you will want that if shoot that range.

Yeah it's only the weight that's putting me off really.

The money difference quoted to me is 849-1399 as I would get the Mk1 as the Mk2 price is coming down too slowly for my liking :D

It would be nice if the choices half reasonable, it's like saying I want the Canon 70-300L f/4 USM, 70-300L f/4 IS USM and the 70-300 f/2.8 IS USM when I could just go for the latter.

It's a fantasy thread but it's good to see what people would go for and why rather than reading out the whole pro range.

Being more realistic
Tokina 11-16mm
24-70
70-200
1.4,1.7,2.0 TC's
200mmF2 for candid long distance bokeh shots:

Nikon D3s
Nikon 14mm - 24mm 2.8
nikon 24-70mm 2.8
nikon 70-200mm 2.8

4 x Sb900
4 top data transfer 32gb CF cards

that's the basic wish list and sits around £9-10k

I want to start playing with video so the D3s is the one to get, and having used a Sb900, 24-70 and 70-200mm I'd be very happy with that.

Also add in some more Lencarta studio lights, etc etc

Went shopping today, found somewhere with a 2.8 Mk1 to look at, I think I will live with the weight. Reading DPR though the 2.8 gets a few mentions for not being that great with a crop especially on the 7D.

It's unlikely I will go FF.

I think I'm going to have to bang in a few nights OT and stretch to the Mk2.

Actually, if you are on crop, the 70-200 lenses are very long ! I'd be more inclined to get a 50/1.4 and a 135L instead of a 70-200 2.8...

No zoom but you have awesome bokeh !

I had the 1.4 but it didn't really offer much over the nifty tbh except a slight better build quality. I've looked at the 85 and 135, both are really impressive especially the 135 but I want the zoom really for when I start going to GPs again.

I'd like to have the extra to buy a 135 but i have to stop somewhere for a while :D

I have just about everything I want (or am prepared to carry!) so I'd go a different route and ask our benefactor to fund the development of a lens I'd actually use for nearly everything. How about a 16-160mm f4 (or 15-150mm if you prefer)? Good close-up capabilities would be a bonus; realistically, I think 1:2 would be sufficient. Obviously it's going to be large but it shouldn't be larger than, say, my 50-150mm f2.8. The only other lens I'd need would be my 12-24mm f4.

um short answer is a lot..

the first things that spring to mind..

1dmk4 and make the mk3 the backup body, 5dmk2 for portrait work.. um..

I'd like a 5D mkII as a second body. Also I'd replace my Sigma 70-200 f2.8 with the Canon 70-200L f2.8 mkII. The 400L f2.8. The holy trinity, 35L, 85L and 135L. The 16-35L mkII and the 100L f2.8 Macro. Might as well chuck in the 1.4x and 2x TC's as well :)

The TSE 17L would be very nice to play around with, also the MP-E 65, but I'd be happy with the above.

Oh and a decent laptop to process it all on :D

Money no object... I'd replace most of my gear I think.

D3x (portraits)
D700 (general purpose)
Nikon 14-24 f2.8
Nikon 24-70 f2.8
Nikon 70-200 f2.8
Nikon 85 f1.4
Tamron 17-50 for my D300
SB900 to replace my SB800
£13k... it doesn't half start mounting up!

I would be keeping my D300, SB600s, tripod, 50 f1.4, 30 1.4, 150 f2.8.

I have to be the unluckiest lens buyer of all time. 17-55 came today with dust in the front element. I initially convinced myself it didn't matter and I'd end up with some in it anyway.

Then after an hour of it on my mind I sent it back, I dropped that much money I should expect better out of the box?
