How much could you drop on photography without thinking about it

Exactly, if money is no object then might as well cut and paste the catalogue. But when you start choosing then some thought should go into it.

There was a 5d2 in there but it didnt save in my cookie.

And i would go with nikon for everything but portraits.

And 200-400 = 200mm, 300mm and 400mm and all in between in one lens for flexibility. If you can afford it, why not ?

You also need to add £60k of hasselblad and then £100k of Red-ONE to the £55k :)

I think his point was nobody is going to own the 200-400 and primes in the same range - the primes are sharper and faster, hell the 70-200 is sharper and faster at 200mm, once you get to 300mm there's no difference in weight and you'll never take both with you so even with money no object it's wasteful...

At the moment I'd love to just go out and buy a:

Nikon 105mm f2.8 G AF-S VR IF ED Micro Nikkor Lens

and a D300s to go with it :D

I have the money but just cant justify spending that much for a hobby.

I'll settle for a D90 and Tamron 90mm macro

If I was starting again with money no object, for my needs I think I would go for:

1d mk4 for sport and 5d mk2 for everything else
A zoom for every occasion 16-35 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8
300 2.8 for motorsport, 100 2.8 for macro

A 580ex and maybe a prime for portraits ~85mm but I'm not really in to that at the moment.

The insurance value of my current gear is £6,000. Quite frightening when you add it up really and there will of course be more in the future!

Got macro I don't think you will see any difference between the D90 and D300s, and the difference between the Tamron 90 and Nikon 105 is also not worth giving 2 hoots about.

If you really want to get into Macro, then the Nikon 200 f/4 lens would be the one to get (or the Sigma 150 2.8).
Even body choice is not so clear with Macro work- in general a longer working distance is useful and the larfer DoF of the crop body is also desirable.

One thought I just had- is anyone making cool HD videos with macro lenses. I want to to see homemade spider closeups etc... That is one area where video on DSLRs would make a difference as aopposed to the regular shots people seem to do.

Hmmm well nothing much really, because no amount of money spent is going to improve my photography.... perhaps would make more sense to go a study coarse etc.....
There was me thinking it was the eye and skill of the person holding the camera.....;)
Like to see someone try and carry all that kit about ...LOL

This setup would be lovely (excludes stuff like stands/tripods/umbrellas..), but as it's only a hobby for my I could not really justify it.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera Body *2 £1,694.00 £3,388.00
Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8 L USM Lens £998.99 £998.99
Canon EF 100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM Lens £759.00 £759.00
Canon EF 135mm f2 L USM Lens £931.99 £931.99
Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II USM Lens £2,149.00 £2,149.00
Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Lens £299.99 £299.99

Canon RS-80N3 Remote Switch £44.49 £44.49

Total: £10,447.41

Although saying that it's shocking what my kit does add up to:-

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II Lens £89.99 £89.99
Canon EF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM Lens £929.99 £929.99
Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera Body £1,694.00 £1,694.00
Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flashgun £219.00 £219.00
Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flashgun £389.99 £389.99
Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L USM Lens £622.99 £622.99

Total: £3,950.95

Luckily most of the above was purchased before the large hikes or s/h bargins.

Anyway I'm sure I and most people here would still want something bigger/better if their got their wish lists. :p

To a point. One of my images i posted up that came straight off camera - i had to use live view to take it as i was holding cam above my head.. therefore if i had used the d70 i couldnt have got that picture!

ermmm

This wasn't with Liveview (30D, no liveview), it's just holding a camera above my head above the crowd of people, point at the guy REALLY QUICKLY after i saw what he was doing and took 1 shot.

No Flash
No cropping
Hardly any processing.

and yes, its with a camera from like 3 generations ago.

The only thing i use liveview for is do Custom White Balance. The advantage of a better camera/glass for me is the ISO mainly. All the other stuff are seldom taken advantaged of.

D700; AF-S 24 1.4; AF-S 85 1.4 (it's coming ok); the knowledge that more gear means more problems not less

Great minds (though I'll likely settle for the 85/1.4D I've got)...currently working towards that 24/1.4. I've got plenty of other lenses, but a 16/2.8D / 24/1.4 / 85/1.4D walkaround bag is my ultimate plan.
