They seem to love Halls soothers (or some other cough sweet) in Tijuana, large boxes of them everywhere randomly.
There is plenty of parking, reasonable costs for all day at the border, leave the car in the USA (next to the McDonalds) and walk over.

I'm guessing its the usual over reaction. I've been thorough a few area's which the LP book says exercise caution and never had a whiff of trouble, just pack your common sense in your suitcase and you'll be fine.
If it is REALLY dangerous you'd know about it

Typical American overreaction.
The country has a population of 112 million and the amount of needless tourists who have died since 2006 is just about getting into the 1000 - 1500 range (and how many of them were actually real innocent tourists, and not some Yanky dudes on a spring-break - doing some minor drug pick-up - then getting annoyed when the gear isn't too cheap or good)
Now consider somewhere like England - where tourists are just as likely to be targeted in most inner city scum areas.
All you have to do is use your head. If you stray into a dodgy area in Mexico, and get involved in stuff - don't expect to be saved. It's as safe (if not safer) than most places here. In fact - I felt safer in mexico than I have felt almost anywhere else.
The reason the USA sites (and the California based sites in particular) don't like the place - is because they don't want Americans going there & spending American money there (and they don't like Mexicans & Mexico in general) - because they think they are invading their country and taking over (Yep - I know it's a generalisation - but 'a lot' of Americans just hate them - Simple as)

Went there very briefly - extremely tacky, lots of beggars (toddlers, some of them) and scary guys trying to suggest (ie. physically drag you into) the various clubs and bars. It was horrid. Only went there because we were staying in San Diego and it was a short train trip.
