My PC bit the dust the other night while playing BC2. Just shut off. I am 99.9% sure it's the motherboard (the PSU, RAM, CPU ang GPU run fine in another rig) so what do I do?

I have a Q6600, 4GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800, a Coolermaster iGreen 650 (or somthing like that) and a 5850.

Do I go 1156 and get an i5, keep my RAM and go AMD or spend money on a whole new setup? I'm not sure spending more dosh on old tech is a good move, but I like to upgrade bit by bit, so the wife won't go mental :)

1156 is being phased out soon isn't it? Would a i5 750 be sufficant for the next 3 years or so? Is going AMD and keeping the DDR2 wise? I am just pretty fed up atm, the PC was fine for all my uses at the moment :(

you can only keep your ram with a AMD cpu and AM2+ motherboard, which isnt a big enough upgrade.

a i5 will need DDR3, a AMD AM3 will need DDR3 and so will i7

so just buy another LGA775 motherboard and get gaming again.

I know. I had the CPU to 3.0 stable (RAM underclocked to 667 though)...

Also, it's a MATX board I'd need as I have a Mini P180. Good clocking 775 MATX boards are thin on the ground and not so cheap... I tried a Gigabyte G31 board I had laying about with no joy. It didn't want to OC 1MHz

What stulid said isn't strictly speaking true. Some AM2+ mobos will take AM3 cpus. I know this for a fact as I have a phenom X2 555BE on an asus M4A785-M pro mobo with 6GB of DDR2.

It depends on your budget, I did this as I had £80s of DDR2 lying around and the rig i built is fine for gaming and is mostly used as a HTPC.

You could replace your mobo with a similar model but a current AM3 mobo with CPU and DDR3 would be a better upgrade. As you mentioned intel is changing sockets so atleast with AMD you have some room for future upgrades.

Sorry to hear about the demise of your pc, hope we've helped....good luck with the build

I never said anything about the cpus, the AM3 motherboards will be DDR3 which is what i said.

When you mentioned i5 and i7 it suggests CPUs. I was only pointing out than AM3 CPUs can be used with DDR2 as well as DDR3 depending on mobo.

that middle line is referring to motherboard sockets, tried to keep it simple.

the first line shows that a AM2+ will take DDR2 and being the + model will accept a AM3 cpu.

Yeah i know you know your stuff. I was just pointing out that he's RAM could be salvaged and still use a more modern CPU. It's easy to get wires crossed when talking tech and some people get confused easily.....i'm meant no disrespect

Can anyone reccoment a MATX 775 board that will have a good chance of getting mu Q6600 to at least 3GHz?

I remember seeing DFI boards that were well over £100, somewhat more than I'd be happy to sink into old gear :(
