What brand is your home computer? Your Toshiba disk will be customised for your laptop and thus won't work with your desktop.

and use the CD key which is written on the under side of the laptop to validate it.

No. Your laptop has an OEM windows licence, meaning you're Windows licence is tied to your laptop and cannot be transferred. If you want Vista for your desktop you'll have to purchase another licence. What OS is your desktop running?

oh and if i use the CD key from the laptop will it be a genuine windows setup?
No your desktop will be unlicensed and as illegal as a pirate copy. Every computer you have has to have it's own individual licence. You'll be using 1 licence for two computers.

the recovery disc will only work on different laptops of the same range.

i.e. if i bought 4 toshiba laptops with all the same specs, i would only need the 1 recovery disc for all 4, rather than keeping all 4 disc.

using it on a desktop won`t work in theory as the recovery disc will be installing all the components i.e. the gpu of the laptop vs the gpu of your powerful desktop.

a simple analogue would be "trying to feed a elephant, a mouse meal"

hope that raised a laugh
