Ok currently have a W reg Vauxhall Vectra 2.0GLS 110,000 on the clock. Its my first car so just under a years no claims (touch wood). I am now doing a lot more travelling with my new job (300miles a week minimum). I have between £1000 and £2500 to spend. Looking for a big ish size motor with at least some pep but more important reliable. Does such a thing exist:confused:

For 2500 quid and the money from your Vectra im sure you would.

300 miles a week it has to be a diesel. You'd be potty to consider anything else unless you have a works fuel card or get it back on expenses.

Have you considered something Japanese? Honda Accord diesel is well regarded and a very capable car too.

300 miles a week is only just over average mileage, there MIGHT be a case for diesel but its completely ridiculous to suggest you'd be 'potty to consider anything else' especially when you consider the HUGE amount of hassle you potentially buy into with a cheap diesel!

Is the Vectra becoming a liability? If not, it might be a bit silly to spend similar money on a similar car, you never know what problems you might be taking on

He did say 300 miles a week minimum. You think that's normal? That's over 15,000 miles a year. Certainly several thousand miles more than the average which is under 10k. There may be a few added issues buying a modern diesel but you can also buy into a heap of trouble buying a petrol too.

Get down to an auction where old company cars are being sold off. Serviced on the dot at a main stealer with genuine parts. Assuming it's fit and straight you can't really go wrong. Modern diesels will do 100k without breaking a sweat, 200k with correct maintenance easily.

Average is not under 10k at all. I cannot agree with any of your advice, it all seems quite wrong.

He has under £2500 to spend. Nothing at a car auction is going to be direct from the fleet. They will be mostly 3 year old cars at quite a lot more than his budget. For £2500 he's going to find 90% nails and 10% great bargains but unless you really know what you are doing picking that 10% out is difficult and auction buying is dangerous.

Your post couldnt have been more wrong had you declared that Germany won World War 2.

As for saying you cant really go wrong with a £2.5k car at auction, just.. LOL!?

You'll struggle to get a half decent diesel for £2500 that hasn't done big miles.
You'll get a 2002/2003 old shape accord for that money yes, but watch insurance with jap cars, and german for that matter, they tend to be more expensive. They will also be the most reliable at least.

Your not going to get a current shape Accord diesel for £2500 unless its moon miles/poor condition.

Company cars may be 'abused' by their drivers but they're always main dealer serviced, on time and with manufaturer components. Who's to say some private seller from the side of the street has a folder full of freshly printed 'service receipts' and hasn't even checked the oil in 18 months, never mind changed it?

What is the average mile per year?

Quick google shows 7K~, but too many statistics to just throw about numbers.

The accepted convention is that average mileage is 12k a year though some sources go with 10k. Never seen it described as 7k before!

You keep missing the point don't you? He has 2.5k, he won't get a 3 year old ex company car!

I strongly disagree with your posts in this thread, at best they are misleading at worst plain wrong!

Ex fleet stuff at 2.5k will have had subsequent private owners anyway!

So there isn't any statistics somewhere to say what it is?
