LOTRO to go 'free to play' in the autumn....

Ah, damn. Am I best waiting then until it goes properly F2P?

I can't add the 14 day trial anyway - after clicking through it comes to purchasing the full game ?

(I've clicked Add Trial Game > LOTRO > next screen it gives me is "Purchase Game for £35!").

Not really sure about the status of this, it says sign up to see if you gain entry to the Free to play Beta?

Anyway for a complete newbie, what type of character would people recommend. I usually like playing Templar style characters, the old D&D Paladins that were basically tanking healers that could dps the sweet bejesus out of things as well. Since modern mmos don't really have that, I like melee combat, and the idea of making my own armour?

The Guardian class has become extremely versitile since the last big update and are now great fun to play in PvP. Massive pool of morale, the best heavy armour ingame and a DPS stance called 'Overpower' which basically makes them one of the best classes for PvP.... and some people even play them properly as a tank I'm told ;)

As a new player I would also say try out the 'Runekeeper' who albeit a light weight in the armour department has the single best tactical DPS currently ingame oh and did I mention they can heal themselves and others ? Great fun to play and a class that can attack on the run with many skills that have NO inductions !! Boom-tastic..

Thanks for that eekfek. Is there an OcUK guild type thing on any server? Mind, 9GB to download, so I won't be playing tonight!

Yes there is an Ocuk kinship on Laurelin.

Looks like turbine are doing round 3 of beta invites, if you signed up with promo codes from massively or any other site you will have a greater chance of being invited - i got invited to beta again this morning but im already it :(

It makes for good times in the Prancing Pony on a Monday night, seeing what people are playing in their little groups. I didn't realise you could play music from your hard drive until I passed 2 hobbits and an elf playing Amy Macdonald's This Is The Life.

Not sure but i think they need to be in the ABC format, something like this

z/8 [^C35/8z/8] [E7/2z/8] [A11/4z15/8] [a5/8z/2] [e3/4z3/8] [A5/4z/2]

I downloaded mine from a site called the Fat lute.

Anyone else recognise that sort of coding from the ol' Nokia days?

Also, another plug for the runekeeper - fantastic class, but important to remember that you'll be traiting for either burst/DoT DPS or healing, and while it's easy to switch between damage & healing with one of the legendary traits you get later and a bit harder to do my spamming neutral skills, you won't be equally effective both ways. Still, you can see how frustrated other classes get in pvp when you wear them down with damage and control skills, only to switch in a few seconds and undo all their hard work.

Im doing 2 toons at the moment a minstrel and a hunter, minstrel keeps dying espically when i have the thing on that cuts my healing in half, but makes my shouts better.

Save Warspeech for soloing dps and switch it off if you're going against mobs where you need to heal yourself as it incurs a huge penalty on your heals. Don't use it in groups until you get used to how it can change your group dynamics ;)

You should pretty much always use warspeech as you'll get two instant big hits, a few quick big hits with your mace and heals to go with it, some AOE, and then IF you need to you just drop warspeech midfight to get big heals going.

Where abouts is your minstrel dying, frankly there isn't a class out there that should be dying before mines of moria these days, in almost any situation or content, a few group instances aside.

My hunter, first character, has become pretty pointless since the RK, the hunter is less survivable due to healing and crowd control/stuns the RK has, and also has less damage, and less AOE attacks, its a ruddy joke. The RK is flat out better than the Hunter for any real situation these days, more in demand for everything and basically just better. THe hunter is less survivable so realistically, in terms of balance and having zero healing(if you're daft enough to go for a race other than men) should have the highest DPS of any class, and was really the point of the class originally. RK should maybe be close to hunter in DPS, but definately below, and have decent healing, but NOT rival the Minstrel for healing.

Theres some nice buffs for Hunters in the F2P (the NDA is lifted btw, can freely talk about it :p) including a new shot that costs hp instead of power, a new corruption removal melee skill that dazes and blindside can interrupt inductions.

Have to most agree on the RK front though, they are somewhat silly in their uberness :(

It could be that i was attcking gold mobs ( elite) in the barrows and 4 started to mob me then you cant get the healing song off because you keep getting hit which resets the charge and the morale pots arent that good.

Just to say if ur in the beta and needing a minstrel who is a weaponsmith/prospector lvl 21 or a hunter forester/woodworker lvl 24, they are called Daihn and Sofiel

On the plus side, I have fun playing my Hunter , which is the only point I need :D

(having said that, I also have fun playing my Minstrel, Captain and Guardian, so take it in that context :) )
