E6600 to Q6600 under windows 7?

Hi all,

I recently acquired a 2nd hand quad core 6600 as an upgrade to my current dual core E6600. I also upgraded the RAM with anohter pair of sticks identical to the Geil pair I already had.

When I booted the machine up it autodetected the quad core cpu and installed drivers. However now the machine hangs in windows after a minute or tw.

Is there anything obvious I have missed, do I need too load motherboard drivers too? Its an Abit AW9D-MAX.

There is a mild overcloak on the system but that was how I bought it form ocuk so I am not too familiar with whats going on 'under the hood'. Perhaps best to 'restore too factory settings' in the BIOS do you think? I did post a similar question under general hardware but thought perhaps in here would be more appropriate.

Thanks in advance

CMOS re set
Q6600 dropped in
still get same issue, windows boots and then hangs after 1 or 2 mins

clock speed is set at 266 and multilpier is x9. I need to tone these settings down a bit? What should I set them to?

I assumed, perhaps naively, that resetting the cmos would automatically give a stable system as it'd be the factory defaults.

As you may have guesses I not the most up to speed on all this so any 'hand holding' will be gratefully received.

What is the motherboard?

Are you running the latest bios?

Is your PSU upto the extra stress the quad is giving your system?

Run CPU-Z, this will tell you what version the Q6600 is (B0 or G0).

What heatsink are you running? is it installed correctly and not running hot?

what voltage is the bios set to for the processor?

Stable overclocking settings for the e6600 are pretty unlikely to be stable with the q6600.

Checking whether your bios supports 65nm quad cores / simply updating to the newest bios available is your first step.

If you go back to using two sticks (of ram), and stock settings, it should be now stable. Going up to four sticks generally means tweaking a couple of things in the bios (northbridge voltage, mostly) to keep it stable.

It's much easier to work out which new thing has made it unstable if you only change one thing at a time :)

Its an ABIT AW9D-MAX board. I checked that the Q6600 would be supported on the abit site before dropping it in.

I have never changed the BIOS, this perhaps is looking like the most abvious oversight. Its v6.00 dated 15/9/2006

PSU is a BFG800W. With a single 470GTX gfx card I would hazard that this is plentiful power.

CPU-Z is telling me its a G0 cpu, what the significance of this is I am not sure. (ran CPU-Z ibn the 2 min window i get before it hangs, I did reduce the multiplier to x8 before going through to win7)

Heatsink is an Arctic Cooling freezer pro 7. Temps in BIOS are indicating 40 deg c

Voltages are set to auto detect and is 1.3250v for the cpu and 1.80 for the RAM

will search out new BIOS version, and how to change it as not done it before, do that, then go back down to 2 sticks of ram and see how we go.

Thanks for all the comments

I would recommend going back to the e6600 and original two sticks of ram before flashing the bios. In practice you'll probably be fine if you don't, but flashing the bios to a newer version on a machine that you know isn't stable worries me. A bad flash takes a lot longer to recover from than swapping the cpu out.

At least go down to two sticks, then flash, then back up to four sticks. Autodetect voltages will be fine for normal configurations, but your board might not think four sticks of ram is normal. Abit are good, but I don't know if it's good enough for auto to deal with the additional ram unaided.

Try increasing the MCH Voltage in the BIOS (Northbridge) as your ultilising all dimm slots.
Also what check the memory voltage.

well trying to create bootable floppy disk OR usb stick makes me just want to cry at the moment. still battling.

finally managed to create a bootable USB using a downloaded HP utility and, from the same site, some downloaded XP files.

Put all the ABIT stuff on there and away we go. Did the 'runme' thing and it all went off and running.

I am now stuck at a screen with the samurai chap wielding a katana asking me to press TAB to show post screen or DEL to enter set up.

Neither works.

Tried saitek USB keyboard, and old logitech board with the purple connector, non USB.

Suggestions?

several times.

trying it again now.. leaving it in the clear bit for a good 5 mins

still no joy. If i were stuck before I am now well and truly up the alimentary cannal with no means of movement :/

Have you tried with only one stick of ram, to rule out any possible voltage increases like I mentioned above.

before i tried flashing the bios i went down to 2 sticks from 4. just tried again with just 1 stick, same result.

i can get it to recognise no input from the keyboard, either one, at all. Anyone else had this particular problem?

last gasp was popping the battery out for a few mins and then reseating.

still no joy.

will perhaps take this to motherboard forum tomorrow. Thanks for all the help and comments thus far.
