Which games are good for LAN parties? I'm hosting a day later this month, should be 8 of us in total. Already got COD4 and Dirt 2 down (used before and they're good fun), but what else is there (aside from CS and TF2, I can't stand TF2...)?

Did think Worms at one point, but it's only 4 player.

Whatever it is, it'll need to be a bit older, as my friends don't really want to part with a load of cash on games that they'll potentially play once. (Otherwise I'd do MW2, as the maps are better suited to ~8 players that COD4's).

Already got Flatout. Wanted it since I first saw it in PSM2 magazine years ago. Then saw it in the Steam sales and got for something like £2...

Still only £5 too. Good suggestion. Keep them coming!

Really don't like TM. Just seems a waste of time. It seems more of a game that would do well on one screen like Micro machines or Mashed.

Good shout on the C&C, may have to have a look at those.

I'll have another go at TM...

WaW would require everyone buying another COD game, which with prices on COD games not retreating, would prove to expensive for my slightly-tight-fisted mates...

Possibly same reasoning with Shift and Grid, but I'll have a look.

oooh, Trackmania Nations - freebie.

The full version is £20 on steam :(

Trackmania Nations Forever is free. I think all it misses out on from the bought game is the car selection and textures etc. You can join games hosted on the full game with the free version fine iirc.

TMF is one of the regulars at the lans I go to :)

Armagedtron is good fun. Might be worth a look (another free one)

Flatout is brilliant, you won't regret that at all.

I've not played the new AvP after negative reviews, but the old AvP2 is brilliant in survivor mode - a bunch of marines getting stalked by an alien, with victims turning into aliens when killed. Brilliant fun!

You're lacking an RTS there too!

Flatout or Flatout 2: Ultimate Carnage.

I promise you'll be laughing yourselves to death for hours :p

Problem with Ultimate Carnage is that its done through Games for Windows Live for multiplayer, with no LAN option at all. And at Lan parties, its often a case of not everyone having the game, so cracks are handed around instead. Flatout 2 is an awesome pick, though, and cheap on Steam too.

We had a lan party in Holyhead yesterday and suffered the same problem of poor lan support in games from Games for windows or Battlenet. We settled down for an old bash at Battlefield 1942, then installed the 1918 mod and did crazy biplane races around the maps (and landing on a zepplin).
Like most lan parties, we suffer from lost of time with having to install games, ensure they work on lans and check everyone have the latest patch. Company of Heroes is a culprit for looooonnnggg patch installation.
