To agree with the first part of eatcustard's post, why doesn't she just go and test drive both? We can all provide our subjective opinions on the cars but really what matters is which she prefers, not what a bunch of car geeks prefer, no?

Indeed, I told her this already, but she still wanted me to look into it so I figured I might aswell ask in here.

It seems they are fairly matched in different ways though.

Thanks for the write up too, Simulatorman!

Tell her to try a new Cayenne, its a blind mile in front of the Merc or BMW, it even looks nice now.

Have you even driven a new shape ML?

Is has the same 'horrible' engines out of the E Class and S Class!?

The seats are electric are standard with full 8 way lumber support, fantastically specced and priced!

The ML is obviously a better comparison with the X5, and both have their own positive and negative points.

Between the X6 and the ML, I'd chose an ML for the 5th seats and more usuable luggage space.

Spec wise, an ML Sport comes with a lot more standard spec than an X6.
The engine in the BMW is much smoother, more refined and give better economy.

I have driven both, which is why I commented. I find it interesting that the only reason you're going with the ML is because of the 5th seat and extra luggage space, despite the lower spec for the money as you point out. That says it all really.
How do you know that they are horrible when you don't even know what fuel they run on?
Well if the OP('s mum) is buying brand new then she'd be a fool to buy anything other than a diesel auto because of the residuals. So I assumed she would be looking at diesels and based my comment on that. :)

I said the ML is a higher spec, did you not learn to read at school boy?

Sorry that was a badly written sentence. What I was saying was- The only reason you'd choose the ML is for the 5th seat and luggage space, not because it's a better car. Your post implies that if the BMW had 5 seats and extra luggage space, then you'd choose that instead, despite the BMW being lower spec for the money.

My post doesn't imply that, it merely states why I would choose the ML over the X6.

Of course if it was between an X5 and the ML - both of which are similar vehicles then the choice becomes a bit more difficult.
