ok, is it true that if you touch the chips on a stick of ram you kill the stick?
i have been working as an engineer for years and have never used a wrist strap, we never did at college whilst doing the A+, and i have never once had a damaged chip from this, so is it a myth or is it like a 1 in 10 chance it will damage it?

It's not a myth although the chances of actually damaging a component is quite slim. Quite a few people just ensure they keep touching the PSU casing or Chassis when they are working inside a system but I use a wrist strap for peace of mind.

The A+ has a section which covers this and talks about using a suitable grounding mat or wrist strap by the way.

The only reason I'd ever use an anti-static wrist strap would be to cover my own backside if I was working on someone else's machine, not because I actually thought it was necessary.

I've handled so much RAM over the years it's beyond counting. Normally hold it at either end of its length by the PCB, but I've manhandled more than a few units and never had any problems.

Just touch a metallic part of the case with your hand and you're fine.

My dad has a masters degree in computer science and he has always told me to use a strap while handling electronic components. Fair enough I dont really use one for handling RAM/GFX cards but when im installing mobo/CPU or something I tend to use one. Think about it, if you buy a 980x and dont use a wrist strap while installing it and it just so happens you ruin it with static thats all that money gone to waste, so kinda worth it IMO always wana be on the safe side

ive never had a problem but i dont build up static , some people do my wife can be walking around a shopping centre and she will slowly harness static energy if you touch her she gets a small zap which is kinda cool.

wouldnt let her build a pc for me!
