Tell me about Audi A3s

Yes, it did. But by that time it had become rather unpleasant.
It was over 30C so it didn't take long for it to get stuffy.

I'm sure it works perfectly well in our milder climes :)

What an odd comment. Unless you are buying a clapped out Aston DB7 or an old M5 or something I don't really know what sort of 'old shed' you'd find for £10k, especially in the hatchback market!

When did I say I was referring to hatchback sheds? I was talking about people that would rather spend £10k on any older car and have to spend £xk in addition to every waking moment, making it look respectable ;). What I find odd, is that you employ 'artistic licence' (read: shameless exaggeration) in your language left right and center, yet jump straight in when someone else does the same.

It's always a compromise, you compromise on refinement and gain on practicality in exactly the same way that a saloon compromises on practicality and gains on refinement.

It's up to the owner which compromise suits them best, obviously, but it's still a compromise!

So presumably you also dislike saloons because they are compromised in practicality terms? Or were you trying to say that you place less emphasis on practicality than on refinement?

You simply post rubbish, thats the problem. This is a thread about hatchbacks and all talk of alternative cars for £10k was... about more hatchbacks. My recommendation actually was another hatchback - an A3 infact - at £10k. The only reason we breifly got into Saloons etc was because somebody specifically asked me about my views - nobody is suggesting the OP buys a £10k 'shed' and 'does it up'. This exists only in your mind.

So I really fail to see the relevence of a comment about spending £10k on a shed and £7k doing it up, what did you say that, nobody else had tabled it as a suggestion yet you come in and post like everyone in the thread is suggesting that

Somebody asked me why I didn't like hatchbacks. I explained why. The practicality compromise is too far for me with a hatch, I don't want to lose refinement to that extent to gain practicality I don't want. I don't care about practical load space in the boot, I do care about refinement, gosh isn't that difficult to understand. Obviously a Saloon is compromised for practicality reasons as well - compared to, say, a Coupe or perhaps a Roadster, but.. seriously why do I have to explain frankly obvious points to you when everyone else just gets it?

You are late to this party, having to go back over something I said a month ago and re-explain it because your comprehension skills are lacking is stupid.

I'm with Fox. Unless you REALLY want a Mk.II S3 then £10K is plenty enough for a hatchback, maybe £12K if you really really care about a minter.

Someone here suggested a Focus ST, I know they're not great on fuel but you should be able to get a fantastic ST-2 for around £10K and the rest of your budget can go on offsetting the running costs, and maybe even a nice new PC? :p

Focus ST looking the most likely to be honest - I think a remap on it could help the fuel consumption a bit but like you say the money you save can help with running costs.

£12k will get me an 07 ST-2 with 20k miles. Prices in NI seem to be slightly higher.

Fair play. It's a good choice and the money saved will easily offset the fuel costs as the 2.5T engine is a tad thirsty, especially when pushed hard.

Would have loved one back when I got my car but trying to justify 20K/year (in fact i've done 17K already and i'm only about halfway through the year so it's going to be well over that) in a car like the Focus ST would have been impossible.

Yeah that would be high costs indeed. I do probably between 10-15 depending on work projects but if I got 30mpg for mostly motorway driving then it would be fine. Here's hoping!

So the search has been underway for a new wagon and I have recently had a test drive in a 2008 GTI Golf - have to say it really is a lovely machine to drive! It feels fairly heavy compared to the 'go-karty' Fiesta. It has all the upgrades apart from the leather interior but definitely is a nice machine to drive - plenty of poke but also looks less boy-racerish than the fiesta too.

Was wondering what the pros/cons are of looking at an edition 30 version. Is it worth the extra price/hype?

I think the Audi A3 is just out of my price range for a nicely kitted out model so the Golf may fit the bill better. O and it's a white one I was looking at. Never liked white but have to say this one looks awesome.
