Hello all,

I am obviously a massive newbie here and have been thinking of something decent to begin a thread with. There may have been past threads that have approached the issue of the Police, in fact I am sure there have been, however as a serving Police Constable and being mightily proud of that fact, I am curious as to whether there are any other coppers on here.

If so, and they dont mind saying, what force are you with, and how do you find the job?

I am with Bedfordshire Police, and have been for nearly 18 months now. I am fresh faced and still quite green but must say, for the most part, it's a fantastic job. I have already seen some heinous things and dealt with some exhilerating and, at times, frightening situaions. By the same token though, I relish the adrenaline rush that comes with this job. Patrolling an area like Luton comes with myriad challenges and that is why I am interested to know how other parts of the country fare.

Also, I am interested to see what posters on here feel about the job that we do as officers, frontline. Experiences, bad or good are encouraged.

That's about it really, hope this sparks a bit of debate.

I have a question for you if you don't mind too much.

The police around my way (Birmingham, Queens Road police station) say they cannot enter cul-de-sac's at night. Is this true? It seems ridiculous as this is where all the weed smokers/drug dealers go at night. I reported them as they do their dealing right by our family cars and I was told: "our officers are not allowed enter cul-de-sac's, alleys etc at night."

This can't be true can it? (Sorry for not being on topic, seeing as you are an officer from somewhere that is not Birmingham I thought I'd ask)

I think that the Police do a fantastic job in very difficult situations.

I sometimes disagree with the way some situations are handled on an individual basis, as I made clear in a thread recently, but as a rule we would be far worse off without them.

Some here will attempt to give you grief simply because you are an Officer, pay them no mind, they may be vocal but most are just cowardly ignorant bigots with nothing better to do.

Welcome to the forums....

To the OP do you see yourself as a keeper of the Peace or as a Corporate Enforcer? I only ask as I noticed you said you were a Police Constable rather than a Policeman/Officer and I found it a bit strange you using that term nowadays most will say the latter :)

I think the cops get a lot of flack for what they do. Unfortunately the bad eggs tends to be the ones you hear about and not the good pro-active and "good" cops that are plentiful.

It's a tough and often thankless job, keep up the good work and hope your career develops and fulfills your ambitions.

I did consider the police, but owing to much scorn from my parents declined the idea - which I sometimes regret - but my career progress has gone from strength to strength so not too much regret, and work closely with the police now anyway. :)

I think the police are a funny subject.

a lot of them are really nice guys, and if they stop you in the street or something (Im 18 so if im walking with a group of mates, bound to happen at one points) they'll be like any normal person would really, Ask us what we're up to, where we've been etc etc and when they see we're not a threat exchange the old "Have a good night!" etc etc and be on their way.

However, one night a few mates of mine were walking through a little village(Island, Mersea for those who know it) and 2 officers sped up beside them in a car, jumped out and told them to stand in front of the car and stand still, but their full beams on into their eyes, frisked them roughly, took all their details and told them if they didnt go home straight away they'd be arrested.

Later found out there was a group of lads causing some trouble on the Island, which warrents the police stopping them, but I feel there was no need to treat them like Criminals straight away was just not needed.

Its police officers like these that give them a bad name tbh, they just feel like the most powerful little men in the world with their special shiny uniforms I feel.

Also my GF's dad is a Detective in the Met, and hes a great laugh :)

Police spending time on the forums rather than doing police work  :p.

I'm a massive fan of the police myself, as pretty much my entire family is/has been in the police. Was my back up plan to apply to the Met or Merseyside police if I wasn't able to get in to the Army. I've always found them extremely helpful and courteous, and never had any issues with them myself.

Good luck with the future though OP, you planning on doing a full length career with the police? My mum is around 18 months away from completing her 30 years, she can't wait to leave now mind you, as the employment of civilian support staff has completely wrecked the force in her eyes.

Wow, that sounds erm unbelievable. What if they suspect a burglary is taking place or know of one? "Sorry can't help you, you live in a cul-de-sac"

I respect the Police force for what they do.

Not many people can take the abuse that they get and keep going.

Hats off to you mate :)

I am with Bedfordshire Police,

if you are based in luton, say hi to dell for me, he is my sons football coach.:p

i really respect the police, they see things that most of us will never see or want to.
and often place their lives in danger.
however you do get some jobs worths :p but then you can get them anywhere.
