Breakers yards - are they really worth it anymore?

On Saturday dad got £160 for his Merc 300SL - they pay £100 a ton and it tipped the scales at a shade over 1600kg.

How and why could you possibly weigh in an SL, the very worst of the oldest cheapest R129's are still worth thousands.

Unless it was crashed in a massive way i guess? Even then...wtf. A single item such as a seat will be worth more than £160!?

Surely you would just get paid out and wave it goodbye.

You aint going to buy the salvage back to weigh in are you.

Well thats a waste we could have gone halfs on that Jez and made it a project :)

I know the feeling, most of them round here are the same.

When I was ringing round for a second hand alloy wheel for my gf's Fiesta MK4 most places wanted like £60 for one... yes just the one... luckily I resort to ebay these days to source any spare parts/replacements etc. and I found one from a second hand alloy supplier ebay shop and got the one I wanted for £30 delivered and it's in great condition. As others have said on here as well a lot of scrappies have resorted to using ebay now as well.

As for them online breaker yard websites... I enquired about a part once, never again. Got an absolutely extortionate price for a part that I was after for my old Peugeot 205 and when you tell them no thanks they still keep bombarding you with like 10 phone calls a day for the next week and also no end of emails.

I still have good luck with cartransplants from time to time.

But then I'd never use their parts services, as then you are paying for their time to strip and degrease stuff. Going down there and stripping it yourself is far more fun, and much more lucrative, as you are literally only paying for (a non-guaranteed) part.

Guess it just depends on if you have a decent "self-serve" breakers nearby.

Can you still walk round Cartransplants now? I was under the impression that they had stopped that and it was counter service only.

There are still a few good breakers round stoke. Went to one in stafford last weekend for a gearbox inhibitor for my shogun - best online price was £70, dread to think what mitsi would have wanted and i got it for £5!

Depends on which location, but the last time I went to the site just outside of Nantwich I walked around, socket set and lump hammer in hand.

Breakers around here are generally rubbish. None of the parts are looked after, everything is always scratched and damaged as a result of their methods of storage! What's the point? O and pricing is indeed terrible!!

the one by me is alright. The other day I picked up a K&N air filter, cam sensor, air intake temperature sensor, some air intake tubing and a petrol flap locking motor for £12 for a vectra :) good times!

Burnt out (electrical fire) + rust bucket + no insurance = fail.

For individual parts yards do seem to be pricing themselves out of the market somewhat.

However, the weekend before last they were very useful for me - Our Mondeo had been burglarised, rear tailgate window and side passenger window smashed to get loads of stuff out.

Bought a correct coloured Cat C write-off Mk 2 Mondeo for £250 and stripped it on the premises, replaced the tailgate on ours, along with the window glass. Took the front bumper off it, and a side door (ours is dented) to replace when I get around to it.

Sold the remnants of the Mondeo back for £80, after recovering a few small items that might sell for £10 here and there.

Result!

Sadly, it meant that I spent all weekend on the car and couldnt play my newly won Left 4 Dead 2. :(

Now for a replacement I just tried one of those online breakers yard broker places and I can't beleive some of the quotes I'm getting.

Cheap part + Brokers commission + Delivery = more than a new part locally.

I found them very useful when looking for a wing for our Polo. One in the right colour and an acceptable condition for a 13 year old run around = <£30 delivered
