Has anyone done the above, or know someone that has? My wife has always wanted to try this, so looking at getting her an experience day for her birthday.

If anyone has done this, where did you do it? Was it good fun?

My Dad did one a few years ago (he likes steam trains :o) and seemed to enjoy it. Will ask him tomorrow about it.

Better to jsut get a ride on one.

H+S bull wont let you actually drive one btw.

All depends on the railway and all sorts of other things.
There's no way you'll be let anywhere near a loco hauling members of the public, but some will let your family ride in the carriage behind.

In general, I'd expect you to be in the cab with the actual driver and his fireman, and they'll guide pretty much everything you do, and an awful lot of the real work- Steam engines are delicate little beasties, and you can quite easily run out of puff or blow the boiler if you do things the wrong way :p
I'd expect a decent railway to do basic theory, both of the loco itself, and the railway practices in the morning, probably followed by a return run up and down the line, with you 'driving' on the return journey. There also ought to be shunting of the stock and bringing out/ putting away the loco at either end of the day.

I've often wondered this. I'd love to drive any train, Steam, Diesel.. Then I'd stop the train for an hour 5 yards from a station and not tell my passengers why.. No seriously, I'd love to but for now I'm stuck with my OO gauge train set :) - Tickets Please!
