Dual monitors, help!

Hey guys,

So my 5870 has a problem, it ups its clockspeed when I use 2 monitors, then when I disable the second monitor, the clockspeed doesn't return to normal until a reboot. I RMA'd the card and OC couldn't replicate the fault, they have charged me £10 and returned it.

So, if I got a 5450, could I run my second monitor through that card? No gaming on my second monitor, it's simply for watching movies and then I disable it when I am done, it's a 32" LCD TV.

Latest drivers purposely does that to stop the flickering from happening on the second monitor. It's normal. And yes, you can run the second monitor on the 5450.

That's interesting seen as the OC RMA people tell me that it did downclock itself after disabling the second monitor on the latest drivers, they actually said that, they didn't say the latest drivers don't downclock. Maybe you didn't read my post correctly, I'm saying it wont downclock after the second monitor is removed, leaving only one monitor. It would be pointless to leave the clock speeds high as there is no second monitor to stop flickering.

Well as long as I can run that second monitor with the 5450, it's alright, thanks.

For some reason, I'm getting the feeling that your username is extremely fitting.

Why is it such an issue that your card won't downclock once you've removed your second monitor? Surely it's not about power consumption, else you wouldn't have bought a second graphics card which will more than likely consume more power than your 5870 in its lowest clocks, versus its 400Mhz dual monitor clock speed.

What is the actual problem here? What issue is being cuased by the clock speed not lowering?

Temps actually, the card jumps a good 15c upwards idle when it's running at this higher clock speed, the amps on GPU-Z go to the same as they would when I am in-game. I read that the 5450 consumes only 19w at load so that really is not an issue.
