Ello people,

What's up?

Me got serious probs, since me put on the comp today. I keep getting pixels running all over my screens. Flickering on and off with alternating colors. Both during boot up and even right now while I am typing this thread. Which even makes it very difficult to read web pages. Me have run AVG and it found some detections which I quarantined. Now I have just finished running super anti spyware. Which found 18 detections which I have also quarantined. But unfortunately I am still getting these pixels running all over the screen. What can i do, please help me out?

Do I need to clear the items from the quarantine list?

Much appreciated for your future help

It sounds like your graphics card might be failing.

(Assuming you have a graphics card): If you have a spare DVI or VGA port available on your motherboard, try unplugging your monitor from the graphics card and plugging it into the spare port, often motherboards don't have one spare unfortunately. If you manage to swap the cable to another port and the pixels have stopped flickering then it will be your graphics card which is at fault.

Edit: Hopefully more helpful. :)

thanks for your replies

It's funny, I was just about to write that I fixed all the problems from
clearing out all my cache, temporary internet files, cookies and running ccleaner as well. Then just as I wrote that the problem came back but then disappeared again. But the bottom of the screen shows these pixels and my mouse pointer wherever I move the mouse. The problem is still awful during boot up but seems to subside in windows. It's certainly a lot better than it was originally. Have you got any other pointers, has this been some virus that has effected the bios?

What colour are the pixels flickering to?

Is it a pinky red and a light green colour?

yes it's like that but moves to many other colors as well. Now it's come completely back, it happened when I clicked on a desktop shortcut to launch an application. How can i sort this out. It's so annoying.

The only thing that I can suggest for now is to make sure that the cable between your monitor and computer is plugged in securely at both ends. You have mentioned that it sometimes fixes itself so I believe it could be a loose cable fitting.

I'm not sure if this is a software issue, and I wouldn't be the best person to answer if it was, so I will wait for another forum member's input. :)

thanks for your input, I have already checked the connection cables all nice and tight. I believe this is some virus, some kind of software that has got inside my comp. I hope someone could help me fix this.

You really ought to find another monitor and see if it works and also give JoDaMa's suggestion a try if your graphics card has more than one output.

If the problem persists despite checking both GPU outputs and trying a different monitor, then you may have a driver issue. Download the latest graphics drivers for your GPU and install them.

If that fails to fix the issue then try the following:

Run Malwarebytes Antimalware
Run any kind of Antivirus scanner [Avira and MSE are two good, free AVs if you do not already have one - AVG is crap and doesn't count ;)]
If running XP or Vista try Combofix

it's highly unlikely that that's a Virus. it sounds MUCH more like your graphics card is faulty in some way, probably the memory or the IO bus.

can you try your card in another machine/another card in your machine?

agreed. this has to be graphics related.
has he opened his case. to make sure the graphics card (if he has one) is pushed home properly in its slot and that any power leads are pushed home as well?

Your first reply to me about thinking my monitor may be knackered isn't true. It's been always working perfectly without any glitches. Everything has been working fine till today. Well not everything, I have had some computer problems for a while now, like my sound card audio doesn't work. I haven't had any sound for weeks. But let's not get into that.

I already tried what jodama's said about checking cable connections. Everything is tight in place. My graphics card only has 1 output. I don't have another monitor or PC to try the GPU in.

I downloaded combo fix, I remember using this once a few years back to fix a problem which I had and it worked. But now that I downloaded and clicked to run it, it started to do it's thing and then rebooted the computer. During the boot up I got none of this flickering which was fantastic but then when it got to the windows blue welcome screen the flickering started and I clicked on the administrator account and then came into windows where combo fix continued to do it's thing and the screen was flickering like crazy. Then I saved the log file, now the flickering has stopped as I am typing this message. But the pixels are all over the screen.

Anyway I think it's about time I just do a complete reinstall of windows. I currently have XP but I am thinking of getting window 7. I have never done a reinstall before.

I started by going about backing up my files, and then found something strange, when I deleted some files, programs, and big video files coming in at 2GB each. I then went into My Computer and clicked on my HD to see how much space I now have and the strange thing is that it doesn't update. I deleted some more files and came back to see it update and nothing, I right clicked and pressed refresh again nothing. It just sits on say that I have 93GB total space and 33.2GB available space. Which is impossible. I should have like 70GB left after deleting a ton load of files.

Then I went into my music and picture section and have noticed my library of MP3 tracks, well over a thousand have disappeared. Then My Pictures most of them like well over a thousand have vanished. I am seriously annoyed. Is there some kind of software I can run that can scan my computer to see where these mp3's and pictures have been sent to? And if the scan finds nothing, can it restore the mp3's and pictures if they have in fact been erased?

Lastly, after I have done that, I would want to back up everything onto some dvd+r discs and then wipe my hard drive and defrag and then reinstall windows. How would I have to go about doing these task?

I really hope I can get some further help on this

Many thanks

Your hard drive space sometimes doesn't update until you empty the recycle bin.

Either way, pink and green flickering isn't normal virus behaviour. It does sound a lot more like a dead monitor or graphics card, or maybe even the cable connecting the two.

Also, no need to defrag if you are going to format and reinstall. Defragmenting only affects the files that are there, not the actual disk.
