Can you apply for a role in a company after you have been made redundant?

I'm sure you can but I want to check.

Got made redundant from a company in London back in 2008, a role has come up there and I'd like to apply for it.

Is the company allowed to consider people who have been made redundant? :)

Cheers,
Jake

Really, it depends how long you spent in the foyer with your pants around your ankles and how many security guards who saw you still work there.

Depends how big the company is.

I know a lot of banks will not take you back, though am not enitrely sure as have been mulling doing the same myself.

No reason why not, though of course they'll look at why they previously let you go so you may be at a disadvantage.

I was let go due to department restructures. They got rid of my boss which in turn got rid of all mine, they offered me a crap job a heap of money....I took the heap of money :p

Cool stuff - Fingers crossed :)

Company I used to work for routinely made people redundant and then hired them back again when they reopened an area.

If you were a good worker, then it may well work in your favor... certainly likely to get you an interview at least.

It's an insurance company in London. About 1000 people? 400 in London, 400 in Kent, and 200 scattered around elsewhere.

Depends on the company.
When I worked for Aviva I think they had a policy of not re-employing people within 2 years of being made redundant.
I think at my current employer you can't be re-employed within 6 months, although I'm not sure.

6 months I believe is the limit for tax - redundancy pay is tax free up to a certain amount, and tax will be payable if re-employed within a certain time period - hence why some companies refuse to rehire within that time frame.

Thats strange, you told us back then you worked for a temp agency and got let go because the company didnt renew the contract with the temp agency.

Most companies I've worked for have had a policy of not hiring staff who were previously with the company (though that wasn't specific to redundancy, it covered any reason for leaving)..

No I didnt

I was taken on initially, employed by an agency, then they decided not to renew my contract, then a few days later they approached me with a different job role and employed me directly and I was there for 2 years overall.

It depends on the role I guess, was this the place you were director of IT or something? I guess it might be weird for people previously working under you if you come back (if it's that one).

No I wasn't the director. The director decided not to renew my contract, then he got made redundant and the IT Manager took me on full time and gave me a different role and a load of his responsibilities. At the time I said (being young and stupid) (as apposed to being slightly older and kinda stupid now :p) "so it's kinda like being the IT Director" - Queue OcUK's server needing a few more sticks of ram as the thread sploaded :p

Depends on many things really. Companies will have different policies.
Apply and see what happens.
