Trying to weigh up priorities in my life...is this A4 worth the cash?

A4s are very dull cars...

As for the price, it seems a little bit steep? Especially when you can get slightly older, smaller engined examples of the same model for around the grand mark all day long.

Isnt this like saying why buy a 330i for £7k when you can get a 320i for £4k?

That would be a valid thing to say, as well. It would be very hard to make a case for an E46 330i if an otherwise identical 320i is £3k less. Besides, it isnt quite the same thing, is it? The 2.4 A4 is hardly any good - it's not paritcularly powerful and it saps fuel. It isn't the 2.8 Quattro.

... which itself isn't hugely exciting either. Speaking of which, mine cost £2100, but is a couple of years older, had 98k on the clock, and doesn't have leather seats. I'd say the price is a little steep, 1.7-1.8k would be closer to the mark. Check the front springs as they have a habit of breaking, and also check that the timing belt has been changed - 60k is the usual interval so if it's not been done it will need doing as soon as possible. Otherwise the V6 is pretty much bomb-proof as long as it gets regular oil changes - the Haynes manual recommends every 3k which is a bit excessive, but 5-6k should do fine.

I can sort of see what you're saying, but for a cheap car I don't see how a 01 plate 2.4 A4 is going to be any better than a older, 1.8 variant, arguably it'd be worse...
