Which would be better for an set up used just for gaming (I want to be able to get really good frame rates)

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz

or AMD Phenom II X6 1055t

I have read that X6 will not make a difference to gaming....will it be used in applications in the near future? or not for a while

Well strictly speaking the X6 won't give you any benefits in gaming.

HOWEVER, for the extra £30 I'd personally take the two extra cores, and better overclocking potential.

having 6 cores won't add extra fps to gaming but it will ensure u won't get any slowdown when background tasks are running...

The X6 overclocks a lot easier than the X4 and has lower temps (generally). However for gaming there isn't any noticable difference. But like what has been said already for the price the extra 2 cores are nice not to mention most X6 chips will reach 4GHz whereas it is a fair push for the X4's.

Hi big wayne, thanks for the response guys

I havent got this system yet,

but the other components I am getting are;-

  • Asus crosshair IV
  • 4gb GSKILL 2000mhz RAM
  • GTX 470
  • ocz 32 GB SSD

I will want to overclock and get as much performance as I can.

Phenom II X6 1055T is not worse than Phenom II X4 955 in gaming (clock for clock). There's however the price difference of almost £40 (£150 vs £110 del.). It's significant for someone on budget but if you want to be future-proof or use multi-threaded apps - the difference may be worth it.

I personally wouldn't ditch the extra into the gaming rig but if you do anything else - or are a hardcore overclocker, then do it for the sake of two extra cores and slightly easier overclocking (even though the multi is limited).

Besides, 1055T 95W edition looks like a great clocker.

The 1055t's turbo mode will push it to 3.3 ghz when using 3 cores or less (which is a lot of the time when gaming) which would actually leave it al little faster than the 965.
But either are plenty for all games, so if you need to save money you can.

Hey Quixote, don't the Deneb X4's have Turbo-core also?

To the best of my knowledge, the turbo core feature was introduced with the x6 cpus. The mooted 4 core version of these has yet to appear.
So my understanding was, all x6's have turbo core, none of the other phenom IIs do.
Unless the 955s and 965s have been updated and I've missed it ?
Maybe wait for clarification from someone else ?

Go for the 6 core, you're not going to regret the £40 in the long run

Nor do the people who still use Dual Cores don't regret not upgrading to Quad Cores, it's not entirely needed yet and future proofing is overrated, nothing is future proof, everything get's outdated eventually in a short space of time and hardly anything is always tested to it's full potential.

x6 is a great chip. When running games like GTA that use 4 cores you still have 2 cores left for background tasks etc..

You can never have enough cores..... lol

Moogleys, I see you have the 95w 1055T chip, will that be faster than the 1090T 125w chip when overclocked, because of more headroom?

I have no idea mate i would have thought so.. @ 3.5ghz my chip is using 103W and @ 4ghz its 121W so its less than the other chip at higher clocks.
