***The official Dell Streak thread***

Got a strange bug where I can't add contacts. They appear to add but vanish again after a while. Is anyone else getting this problem? It's incredibly annoying as I have some contacts on there but am missing a fair few that I simply cannot enter. Don't really want to have to wait a month until 2.1 releases for it to be fixed. :(

EDIT: Found a way around it by adding contacts in googlemail. Works but still silly tbh.

I get a little bit of "static" on bass heavy tracks when playing through the speaker at max volume.

I get it quite a lot at anything louder than 40% and even on tracks with less bass. :(

Even with parts with pretty much no bass it sounds scratchy/static-y/distorted

EDIT: Here's an audio clip demonstrating my problem. Track is Opening Credits by Hybrid, from Wide Angle. It should sound like this

Guess I'll have to go down the O2 shop somewhen and see what they can do :(

Streak runs android 1.6
does moving to 2.1 or 2.2 make a difference for movie playback as my shows seem really laggy

Not sure on that but do you have a lot of things running in the background?

Download "Advanced Task Killer" it stops backround apps from leeching performance, might help.

Okay, just installed it and its working a treat. Really excellent and feels SO much snappier even though it was already lovely to use on 1.6!

EDIT: As the kicker it also roots the device too! Although I dunno what I can do with that really as I've only been using Android for a week.

>>2.1 Update Here<<

This was obtained from Dell's staging site and is apparently incomplete. That is, it is missing some features however in terms of stability I have had a few hung processes but its generally the same experience as I had on 1.6 with regards to stability.

IMPORTANT: THIS UPDATE WILL WIPE YOUR DEVICE BACK TO FACTORY DEFAULTS. Contacts should be synced with your GMail account however I'd recommend you backup all settings with a tool such as MyBackup, a FREE download from the Market. I used it and everything went smoothly, apart from some apps & widgets which didn't restore correctly due to differences in the Market I believe. Still, redownloading them doesn't take too long :)

To update, download the package, rename it to Update(.pkg), place on the root of the SD card and power off your Streak. Then power on while holding the volume up+down buttons.

This update is only designed for O2 branded devices HOWEVER it can be installed on unlocked Streaks and US Streaks if you root your device FIRST and do some things beforehand. Also as far as I'm aware if you have already rooted you need to take different steps to the ones I have provided.

It would appear that this update does in fact NOT give root access as I had initially thought. An application said it did however another one requiring root access doesn't work. The rooting tool released a while ago should work with this from what I've read, although I haven't tried it as rooting doesn't really interest me.

Final thoughts: Although this is an unfinished build it is worth upgrading as 2.1 makes the device feel a lot snappier and has lots of cool new stuff like live wallpapers, native multitouch support and other apps on the market not available on 1.6. 720p video recording is VERY nice and the audio quality is greatly improved too on video recordings. My only niggle is the generic 2.1 keyboard which I dislike and greatly prefer the original 1.6 one however its a small sacrifice to make for all the other great improvements.

If you are itching to use 2.1 then go ahead and grab this I'd say, although if you can wait until September, the offical O2 update will be released, which will hopefully have the original keyboard back. =]
