What is that?

Great games last night btw :)

I'm slowly learning protoss, many thanks to Kar here for some excellent advice last night.

As I said to him however, it's almost as if I'm afraid to attack. I was playing someone last night, TvT, and the game lasted 35 minutes when really I should have won it in ~20. I'd built up a massive ground force, and a healthy force of Vikings, and he'd teched up to Battleships and built loads. I need to be more proactive in scouting certainly, because I destroyed his entire fleet of BS (about 30) with my 10 Vikings by hit n' run (Vikings have a much larger range), and then landed them in his base and ripped him apart.

...and I had ~50 marines, 10 siege tanks, and 2 thors sat in my base admiring the view.

Yup, you could have attacked a lot sooner. I love catching out people who spend their time teching up and build few/no units. You just can't do that, at least not against most players.

Of course, with the Terrans it is easy to scout. Just use the occasional sensor sweep.

Yeah dude, really enjoyed them! hehe, moreeee are required! :D

Craft Cup - http://bitsperbeat.com/sc2/
sign up and play, its Free to enter, and theres some real quality players in it.
you should deffo go for it, will be good tour practise.

I watched the replay of that last game, and I'm kicking myself so hard.

I can't believe how ahead I was after the early game there. I kinda acted stupid after the backdoor attack, because I was ahead economically even after that. I thought I was really far behind and did a desperate push that in hindsight, I coulda sat back a little bit and stayed in the game.

Good to learn from these sorts of games though. That two gate opener on blistering is really strong.

*Edit* Entered the cup... :)

yeah it is, i thought you were going forge again so i expanded, then i saw the 2 gate and i was like crapppppp, cos i'd skimped on the lings too.

Tbh that should have been your game, just glad i managed to keep you at bay with my lings... I think you thought i had much more? because i was unsure why i wasn't dead :p

Im a bit stuck when it comes to Protoss FE.
In BW i just used to double up and take 2 expansions because Protoss wernt able to do anything/much aggresive. but now its soo hard because you can be agressive and fast expand. So, the Zerg still need to double expo to keep the economy advantage, but toss can stop it with a few zealots.

some GG's though, enjoyed them, its shown me where i need to improve anyway. I think vs Protoss is my weakest matchup at the moment, focused on ZvT too much!,

Really not a fan of Steppes either, far too small and imo not enough room to get a decent hammer and sickle on the blend for Zerg, unless you meet in the dead centre of the map. even worse against Terran *shudder*

But 2 gate builds are so much more difficult to deal with than a teching protoss, because it limits the Zerg in their economy. Even a 2 gate +1 pure Zeals build with legs, just can't get the expand out. the only way ive found to deal with it is a lot of lings and blings, into roaches. but by that time they could have switched tech to anything!

Think i still have a lot to learn in ZvP

You online tonight for some more?

Yeah I just lost my concentration, and I thought you were massively ahead on econ. I didn't appreciate just how much you'd cut drones in reaction to my two gate. At that point I thought the game was over. But watching the replay, even after losing my main nexus, I was STILL ahead in econ AND army. It was insane. Arghh. I threw away my void ray which was key to staying in the game, and then I threw away my two colossi. Had I kept them, kept my head and just rallied at my backdoor I would have won I think. It shows you though, the immense value of just attacking, even if you're behind.

On Blistering, I always 2 gate, the map is really decided by whoever takes the initiative. If I forge FE, you can expo twice before I can attack, and with creep coverage, it's hard for the 'toss to get ahead, even with colossi.

Two gate gives me a free transition to voids, which then force hydras and keeps you pinned, lets me take a third, while transitioning to 3 robo colossi. You can have a million corruptors at this point, it's not going to make any difference. (And you can't off of two bases AND have enough hydras for the gateway units). I'm not sure there's a strong counter as Zerg to this. You kinda have to have super human instinct for when to drone and when to build forces. Idra like really. Maybe one base muta could do it, but that's very all in-ish and if scouted, gg.

I think roaches against 2 gate is a bad idea as it delays hydras. Better to go spines and slings and once you see the push off, drone like mad. Usually you'll have a window while the 'toss transitions.

Both maps were really Protoss favoured actually. We'll try metalopolis and particularly scrap station (where I get destroyed v Z). I know a lot of people hate it, but I really like Desert Oasis as it forces a different game plan to the usual (claustrophobic) blizzard maps.

I should be on later tonight maybe when missus goes to bed :)

Kar, how on earth do you get to that kind of level? What I mean is:

"counter with this unit, push with that one, spines and sligs and once you see the push off" etc etc....

Sounds like I'm going to get a kicking when I start MP :(

You wont, because you wont be playing diamond players. You'll be playing people like you. So as you start to learn what goes good against what, you'll win more games, and start playing other people who know what goes good against what.

And so on, it gets to the point where you know a lot about the game, playing other people who know a lot about the game. Don't be intimidated is all I can say. Because just think of it like this, just how small are the odds that there *isn't* someone out there in the exact same position as you. The matchmaking is pretty good at ensuring you two find each other.

The leagues themselves might be messed up a bit, but the matchmaking is very good.

Need advice as a zerg player. I can generally overrun my opponent with sheer numbers but I often face terran and protoss players who mass battlecruisers and void rays early on. I try to counter this with hydralisks and mutalisks but I still find myself losing. I'm also trying to build a ground force containing zerglings and roches but can taken apart by their air forces. I just find zerg lack anti-air.

Build more queens :) 2-3 queens will see off an early void ray push and buy you time to get a say 8-12 hydras out with some zerglings which you can then 1a to victory. Remember the Protoss player has been very aggressive in order to get those voidrays out, sacrificing both economy and ground units. Your queens are a cost effective counter to his voidrays. And your hydras will destroy any ground units he has.

Ok guys I got so frustrated that I sucked so bad in this game I stopped playing.

Started playing again last night only against AI and had a bit of fun.

Are there any sites that are good to give beginners tips on what to build etc etc for a basic strat so I can develop. Just so annoying getting face rolled all the time.
