I have a piece of machinery manufactured in 1983 - it contains heating elements and a substance of unknown origin upon which they sit.

This substance may be asbestos - however there were alternatives available (in the 80's), does anyone know what they were called so i can look them up?

I got that link from google too - however that doesnt cover the 80's. Kevlar and GRP were not widely used back then, we are looking more at the bakelite era!

if you google the piece of machinery, it might tell you it's makeup

Sadly not. I rang the manufacturers who were very helpful and remember the machines but do not have details any more of the materials used, only that it might be, but there was an alternative and it might be that but again they dont know the name of the substance!

Is the machine broken, I didn't think sheets of asbestos presented any danger, it was only when it became a powder and could be inhaled that it presented a danger.

I will ask in the office tonight, they have been dealing in naf (non asbestos fibre for as long as its been around) any idea what it looks like, maybe its like an exaust manifold gasket with a metalic jacket and graphite filler.
easy enough to make another one whatever the shape or material

we have quite afew ceramic based materials with that appearance(but has a layered look) ,not sure if they were around then, safety wise i suppose you have to be 100% certain

FYI you should get a competent contractor to remove and dispose of the Asbestos and really shouldn't be doing it yourself.
