I'm a terrible male in that I straighten and use products on my hair, etc but a sunbed is just over the top!

I go on sunbeds three times a week. I don't really worry about the risk of skin cancer, especially from people shouting about it from the rooftops in-between packets of cigarettes.

It's part of my Senco membership and I'd much rather be tanned than pasty. So why not? I don't think it's gay at all.

I bet half the people on here use hair straighters

Actually when I had long hair I used hair straighteners every day for that silky smooth effect.

I guess I'm not doing very well in this thread am I :p

Not that I haven't had a right giggle to some of the stuff posted in this thread but I'm afraid it seems to some if you simply look after yourself (looks wise) you're bent. O well.

Never understand why people go on sunbeds before they go on holiday. So pointless. Isn't he point of going somewhere hot and sunny, to get a tan!?

No. If the only reason is to caramelise your skin then people would go no further than France or Spain. I personally never go for that reason. You would never find me about the pool or on the beach.

Face it; most Brits are white, that is our natural colour. Tanning burns the skin, helps destroy the elasticity of the skin and of course may give you cancer. Skin cancer rates are rising due to this mania for caramelising the skin. The tan fades over a couple of months because the body healing itself and putting you back to your 'natural' state.

I go before i go on holiday, I work in an office so never really get any sun.

Doing it all year is a bit over the top, but i dot see a problem with before your hols.

I bet 64.3% of statistics quoted in threads like these are made up on the spot. Who do you reckon is closer to the truth? :p

Personally sunbeds are not for me as anyone who has met me can attest given I'm so white I'm almost transparent and I have laughed at mates who've used them. However it's your body, do what you want with it and if you're going to let other people put you off then you've now got the problem, not them.

I don't see anything wrong with it, tanned certainly looks better than ghost white, any skin imperfections show up badly on pale skin.

An understanding of basic biology may help you here. Upon exposure to UV light the body produces more melanin which changes the skin colour and existing melanin is oxidised, and the reason it fades is because melanin production is reduced again and levels in the skin decrease.

Fortunately I don't suffer from being super pale so I've never felt the need for a "pre" tan. I think it's a little "precious" to go to a tan booth for a holiday, I can understand why you'd do it, but you realise the strength of the sun is so much more than that of a tan booth that even if you give yourself a nice tan you're going to have to be careful in the sun when you go on holiday.

I've voted what appears to be the majority vote, that unless you're a model/bodybuilder or have a required to be tanned for your job - it's a little "metro". However, it's your call, your life, your skin.

I'd hate to be pale skinned even if I were I doubt I would do it - or just go on holiday more :p
