i've been asked to drive 280m and back in one day with about an hour or so stop over time to do a demo.
so thats 560 miles in one day! about 11hrs driving. its for work

seems OTT to me

what you think?

I think that you and the company would be asked to bend over and their would be no lube involved if you crashed.

You can be done,
your manager can be done
Your company can be.

these are not trivial punishments either.

A few years ago I had to drive 1100 miles in 3 days in a non-turbo, LWB, hi-top Transit which I think is, to date, the slowest thing I've ever driven. The stereo didn't even work. Never again :p.

Assuming he has appropriate business insurance, why would this be the case?

And I agree with Abraham: 560 miles isn't 11 hours driving. And it's not too much to be doing in one day really.

From Glasgow airport to Heathrow (London)

...But my uncle has just driven from Middlesex to Mihas (near Marbella) in Spain - Took him 3 days and 145 Euros in toll costs!! - lol

play the health and safety card. you don't feel it's safe and want putting up in a hotel and having all day to get back after. this is not an unreasonable request.

Not sure of the exact milage, but from Caldicot in South Wales (by the bridge) to Caerphilly, then to Cardiff, then to Bristol, then to Swindon, then to Southampton, then back to Caerphilly, then home to caldicot.

Also from home, to caerphilly, to a few places in South Wales, then down to Cambridge, then all the way back.

They have duty of care to ensure drivers are not putting themselfs at risk and can have adequate rest. The punishments for failing these dutys are pretty high. Just as the driver themselfs have a duty to pull over and rest if needed. But they can all be prosecuted.

We had a nice little paper sent round the other week with it all on. I was actually surprised how much the company has to do and how big the punishments were for the company.

I've done basically the boarder of Scotland (John O' Groats) to Portsmouth in a day, with about an hours stopping in total.

Don't know the mileage but it was quite phat, long old drive.

I've done nearly 700 miles when I drove back from our honeymoon in scotland, and to be honest, it wasn't the best idea ever...

It's a really bad idea for your employer to ask you to do that in a day in the car, if they really want you to do it, they should either send you via train etc if possible, or send someone with you to split the driving.

It might be too much for some people. However I used to do long distance van driving. Driving on motorways is easy and you can do 100s of miles with little effort while listening to your favourite music and eating some snacks :D

In the past when I was just a kid (19-21) I used to do 600-800miles trips with only toilet breaks, the only hard part was that most of the time it was night time driving so sometimes I felt sleepy.

If you are worried about being tired then have plenty of short coffee/tee breaks and you will be fine.

Fair enough, but surely there is no problem in this case as the employer is not asking the employee to do anything unreasonable. A 280 mile drive is quite tame really, and the employer isn't demanding that the drive is completed in a certain length of time, or without stops...

(I don't know legal laws on driving, but I can't see why there would be any legal issue with an employer asking an employee to get to X place at Y time...)
