Me and the gf want to go on a road trip travelling through mainland Europe to Turkey. At the moment, the idea is in its infancy, however we're certain it'll go ahead.

The time we're looking at is around March / April 2011. We're going to set aside two weeks for this trip.

What we want to do is hire a car from London and drive to Turkey and back. We will be stopping at points of interest.

We'll both be driving. At the time of hiring I'll be 22, and so will the gf. Will hiring a car and insurance be a problem? If it reduces costs, we will consider travelling to France and hiring a car from Calais.

Have you been on a road trip similar to this? What were your experiences? What problems occured which you did not anticipate?

Ta :)

Why would you rent a RHD car for a cross-continental drive where every single country on your visit is LHD?

The cars won't be allowed in certain countries, so make sure you check where you can go before you even start to plan.
Turkey could well be among them.

Yea, book it here but pick a LHD up in france at the ferry.

Bulgaria could well also be on the insurance blacklist.
If that's the case, you're not going anywhere near Turkey in a car :p

Unless you elect to drive through Italy and take a ferry to Greece, because I can guarantee you won't be allowed into Albania!

You are 22? A limited amount of hire firms will rent to you, even fewer will let you go there in it it and most will limit you to rubbish cars. Plus it will cost a fortune.

Why not go somewhere nice?

I'm 21 now, 22 at the time of the trip.

Turkey is nice! Either way, she wants to go there to see her family, so the destination won't change. We can offcourse fly there.

What would be a suitable location to drive to taking into consideration our age restrictions? Would it be cheaper to hire and drive to say Germany, Italy, France?

Just realised you want to do this in two weeks...

So at least 4000 miles... Which averages at nearly 300 miles a day... definitely not enough time if you want to stay anywhere.

Why don't you try something different? Fly to Poland or Russia and train it down to turkey from there?

Eastern Europe is awesome, we did...

Istanbul>Bucharest>Brasov>Budapest>Poprad>Prague>Krakow>Warsaw>Vilnius>St Petersburg>Moscow

in 3 weeks. Had just enough time in all the places to explore, mostly stayed in cheap hotels and there were a few sleeper trains.

I'd be shocked if you could hire a half good car at 22 in the UK for 2 weeks for a price that isn't total LOLZ, i'd be even more shocked if anyone will let you take the car out of the country.
